Male friends should know that the main prostate diseases are divided into three common types: prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer.

1. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Enlargement): After the male prostate develops to the age of 45-50 years old, at this time, men's prostates all begin to enlarge. As age increases, the incidence rate gradually rises. 40% of males over 35 years old suffer from this disease, reaching up to 85% by the age of 85. In the early stages of the disease, symptoms include increased frequency of urination, especially at night. Subsequently, one may feel weak urination, a thinner urine stream, or even blood in the urine, until eventually the bladder becomes larger and loses its ability to contract, leading to urinary retention.

2. Prostate Cancer: In the late stages, symptoms such as frequent urination, painful urination, and difficulty in urination may appear. However, patients often have significant systemic symptoms like weight loss, fatigue, anemia, and poor appetite. A digital rectal examination may reveal a hard tumor in the prostate like a stone, with an uneven surface. Serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and prostate acid phosphatase (PAP) are elevated. Prostate needle biopsy can detect cancer cells. Ultrasound examination may show an enlarged gland with irregular boundary echoes or defects, and uneven internal light points, with brighter light points or light masses in the location of the tumor. CT can determine the extent of prostate cancer infiltration.

3. Prostatitis: This is the most common urological disease for men under 50 years old and ranks third among urological diseases in elderly men. In fact, it is a general term for a series of diseases, mainly divided into acute and chronic types. I have already detailed many articles about prostatitis.

Acute prostatitis rarely occurs, but when it does, the symptoms are severe and sudden, including high fever and chills, severe anal or perineal pain, as well as frequent urination, urgent urination, and painful urination. Digital anal examination may reveal obvious swelling and tenderness of the prostate.

Chronic prostatitis mainly manifests as frequent urination, urgent urination, increased nighttime urination accompanied by painful urination or lower abdominal and perineal pain discomfort, with a longer course of disease. Abnormal elevation of white blood cells in prostate fluid and bacterial culture are required for diagnosis. Blood tests, ultrasound, X-rays, even CT and MRI scans are not very useful. Due to the difficulty of antibiotics penetrating into the prostate during chronic inflammation, treatment is relatively difficult. Treatment takes longer and has a certain possibility of recurrence.
