Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor in the male reproductive system, and its incidence increases with age. There are obvious regional differences in its incidence, with higher rates reported in Europe and America. It is reportedly the second leading cause of cancer death in men, following lung cancer.

Epidemiological experts have conducted extensive research on whether eating more vegetables and fruits can reduce the risk of cancer. Based on these research findings, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the American Cancer Society, and the National Cancer Institute jointly recommend that people eat at least 400-500 grams of vegetables or fruits daily to prevent cancer.

Recently, scientists from the University of Illinois and Columbus University have provided many convincing pieces of evidence during animal experiments regarding the issue of whether consuming tomatoes and broccoli together can inhibit the development of prostate cancer.

They injected the same amount of prostate cancer cells subcutaneously into the posterior abdominal ribs of 206 male rats and then divided them into groups for continuous observation over 22 weeks regarding the development of prostate cancer cells in the rats. They added 10% tomato to the diet of the first group of rats, 10% broccoli to the second group, and 10% tomato and 10% broccoli to the third group. Through observation, it was found that the treatment effect was most significant in the rats that ate both tomatoes and broccoli simultaneously, with the tumors shrinking by as much as 52%, and the growth of those tumors being slow. From the tissue slices of the tumor, the differentiation of cancer cells was delayed, but the apoptosis degree of cancer cell nuclei was quite evident. Therefore, it can be seen that eating tomatoes and broccoli together indeed can prevent the development of prostate cancer. Since tomatoes and broccoli are both very common vegetables, if similar results of this experiment can be replicated in humans, it would be highly meaningful to advocate eating tomatoes and broccoli together in the diets of middle-aged and elderly men.
