"Ten diseases, nine pains," pain is one of the obvious manifestations of many diseases. The sensation of pain can serve as a warning that the body has been harmed, triggering a series of defensive protective reactions in the body. On the other hand, pain as an alarm also has its limitations. And certain long-term severe pain has become an unbearable torment for the body.

In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that different specific sensations of pain have different causes, indicating that the possible diseases and methods of adjustment are also different. Below is a summary of several types of pain and their associated diseases.

1. Distending pain

Refers to pain accompanied by a feeling of distension, most commonly seen in the chest ribs, stomach (below the sternum and above the navel), and abdomen. If this pain occurs intermittently, it is often seen in chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers. For distending pain, treatment with Qi-regulating methods is required, such as trying to drink water steeped with aged tangerine peel.

If there is occasional distending pain or throbbing pain in the head and eyes, it may be due to overuse of the brain and eyes, and more rest is needed; but if it happens frequently, it is best to measure blood pressure, as it may be dizziness and distending pain caused by hypertension.

2. Stabbing pain

Refers to pain like being pricked by needles, with fixed location, often caused by blood stasis. Stabbing pain can occur anywhere in the body, but it is most common in the chest ribs, stomach, and lower abdomen. If not serious, rose flowers can be used to steep water to promote blood circulation and resolve blood stasis.

3. Moving pain

Refers to pain that moves around unpredictably or only feels painful without a definite location. If this situation occurs in the abdominal area, it is often due to Qi stagnation, and aged tangerine peel can be used to regulate Qi; if it occurs in the limbs and joints, it is often seen in rheumatism arthralgia syndrome, and it is recommended to consult a doctor for treatment.

4. Cold pain

Refers to pain with a cold sensation and preference for warmth, commonly seen in the waist, back, stomach, and limbs joints. Although cold pain is divided into deficiency and excess in traditional Chinese medicine, the relief methods are largely similar, and warm compresses can be applied with a hot towel or hot water bag.

5. Burning pain

Pain accompanied by a burning sensation, preference for cold and aversion to heat. This manifestation is often due to fire pathogen invading the meridians or yin deficiency with hyperactivity of fire, causing tissue damage. For example, burning pain in the stomach often indicates acute gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux disease. In addition to seeing a doctor for symptomatic treatment, attention should be paid to eating more vegetables and fruits for their heat-clearing effects.

6. Colicky pain

Pain like being cut, often felt as unbearable. In traditional Chinese medicine, the cause of colicky pain is relatively complex and serious, so once intolerable colicky pain occurs, seeking medical treatment at a hospital is the best option.

7. Dull pain

Refers to pain that is not severe and tolerable, but persistent, commonly seen in the head, stomach, and abdomen. Dull pain is often due to essence and blood deficiency or yang qi insufficiency, excessive cold within the body, leading to lack of nourishment and warmth in the body. Deficiency syndromes are more common, so treatment with blood and qi tonifying methods is required, such as adding angelica and astragalus to the diet, or eating some maltose.

8. Heavy pain

Refers to pain accompanied by a feeling of heaviness, commonly seen in the head and limbs. Since heavy pain is often caused by environmental dampness obstructing the flow of Qi, removing dampness from the surrounding environment is the primary task to relieve this type of pain.
