Experts said that walking slowly would increase the thickness of arteries, which is closely related to the death caused by cardiovascular disease. Walking fast can increase the concentration of "good" cholesterol in blood vessels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
The researchers followed a 5-year study on 3208 elderly people aged between 65 and 85. There are both men and women among these people, and anyone who suffered from diseases related to walking (such as dementia) was excluded. Experts used a series of methods to test their walking speed, including testing normal speed and maximum walking speed.
During the entire study period, 209 people died, including 99 cancer deaths and 55 cardiovascular disease deaths.
Researchers found that there was a close link between the death caused by cardiovascular disease and walking speed. Slow walking speed would increase the chance of death from stroke or heart disease (there are many complications of cardiovascular disease, such as heart disease, coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, etc.)
The mortality rate of those who walk the slowest increased by 44% compared with those who walk the fastest, and the former's death probability from cardiovascular disease is three times that of the latter. This situation exists between men and women, old people and relatively young people, and whether they do daily exercise.
Therefore, it proves that exercise is an indispensable part of a healthy lifestyle. Adults should do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise every day, and a mild walk can achieve this goal. Compared with more active people, those who don't move around much and inactive people have twice the risk of dying from heart disease.
