In 1988, 1.17 million residents above the age of 20 in our country died due to smoking, accounting for 40% of the total deaths that year. Especially in urban males, this figure was as high as 58%. Male smoking led to 770,000 deaths, while female smoking resulted in 400,000 deaths. Analyzing by disease type, the deaths caused by smoking were mainly concentrated in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (490,000) and respiratory system diseases (430,000).
