Senile dementia includes vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The former is also called multiple infarct dementia, which is caused by repeated episodes of cerebrovascular accidents on the basis of atherosclerosis and hypertension (including cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage), leading to post-stroke dementia, often accompanied by paralysis and cranial nerve palsy. The latter refers to dementia caused by progressive chronic degenerative changes in the brain with unknown etiology and pathogenesis, usually without obvious neurological signs. Both conditions share common manifestations such as mental and emotional disorders and dementia, and brain atrophy can be seen upon pathological examination.
