The swine flu virus currently spreading is a Type A influenza virus, containing DNA gene segments of three types of influenza viruses: avian influenza, swine influenza, and human influenza.
Human infection with swine flu is a respiratory infectious disease caused by the swine flu virus. After being infected with the swine flu virus, humans will experience symptoms similar to the flu. Using Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) in the early stage of viral infection is effective, but the virus shows resistance to Amantadine (Adamantane) and Rimantadine.
World Health Organization official Thomas Abraham said on April 24th: "We are very, very worried. It appears now that this is a new type of virus that can be transmitted between humans."
In a statement, the WHO said they are stockpiling the antiviral drug "Tamiflu". This drug was previously widely used for the prevention and treatment of avian influenza, and has been tested to also be effective against this new type of swine flu virus.
