Alar Reduction Surgery

When the nostrils are wide, they appear large. If the alar region is too wide, even a nose that isn't low will look as if it is, which can make one's appearance seem dull and lackluster, leaving an unfavorable impression.

For those with a slightly wider alar region but a lower nose, rhinoplasty alone can naturally create the effect of narrower nostrils. However, for individuals with very wide alae, alar reduction surgery is necessary to make the entire nose appear smaller and more mature.

What is Alar Reduction Surgery?

Under normal circumstances, the outer edge of the nostrils should not extend beyond the vertical line of the inner corner of the eye; otherwise, this indicates alar hypertrophy. When the alar region is wide, the nostrils appear larger. Even if the nose isn't low, wide alae can still make it seem so. For those with a slightly wider alar region and a low nose, performing only rhinoplasty can achieve a natural narrowing effect on the nostrils. However, for people with very wide alae, alar reduction surgery is required to make the entire nose look proportionate.

Who Needs Alar Reduction Surgery?

1. Those with thick and wide alae.

2. Those with overly expanded alae, causing excessively large nostrils and an unattractive appearance.
