The Source of Street Snaps

Street snaps, also known as Street Snaps in English, where "Street" means streets, representing what you walk through, see, are free to experience, around you, ordinary, familiar places that you might not even notice; and "Snap," originally used as an adjective, refers to something quick, hasty, sudden, simple, and the sound of a camera click, fast and agile movement, capturing a moment. Street snaps originated from foreign fashion magazines which, in addition to promptly introducing new outfits from major fashion shows, also convey popular trends from the public, thus giving rise to so-called "street fashion shows," marking the beginning of street snaps.

Pioneering Figures in Street Snapping

Kaspalov (1928-1984) was a photographer born in New York. He was an advocate and practitioner of street photography. During his career, he won the Guggenheim Award three times (in 1964, 1969, and 1979) and received a National Endowment for the Arts award in 1979.

In 1963, he held his first exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After studying at the City College of New York, he continued his studies in painting and photography at Columbia University in New York in 1948. Later, he taught photography courses at the University of Texas at Austin and the Art Institute of Chicago, greatly inspiring and influencing his students with his practical teaching experiences.

His inspiration for shooting came from masters like Walker Evans and Robert Frank. Their respective publications, "American Photographs" and "The Americans," were influential. From Henri Cartier-Bresson, he also learned another style of photography. A photograph requires anticipation and timing, just like all street photographers.
