The ranking of Australian universities' research levels edited by the Australian press giant "The Australian" is the first comprehensive review of the quality of research at Australian universities. The traditional eight major universities in Australia (Group of Eight) have, as expected, firmly held the top eight positions in the rankings. The Australian National University narrowly beat the University of Melbourne to rank first, while another traditional prestigious university, the University of Sydney, ranked fifth, behind the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales. Apart from the Group of Eight, Macquarie University and Queensland University of Technology have made it into the top ten of the list.
