Dr. Michelle Whitney, an American clinical psychologist with a PhD, suggests in her book "Child, You've Got It" that children be encouraged to consider both long-term and short-term goals, and try to let them create their own plans. However, Whitney advises that children can decide when to implement or terminate the plan. Of course, parents need to impose certain constraints on their child's plan, adding some clauses such as coming home on time every day, doing homework first, and not getting distracted during study time. "The plan itself isn't necessarily about ensuring the child reaches a specific goal, but rather it’s about seeing if they can successfully adhere to the plan and persevere until the end."
