Recently, opinions regarding the resumption of the use of traditional Chinese characters have triggered wide controversy. Yesterday morning, the fifth forum on National Learning Studies held by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences conducted a special discussion on this topic. Authoritative experts revealed that relevant departments will make new adjustments to Chinese character standardization, and the new standardized Chinese character table will be announced very soon.
"The cost of restoring traditional characters is too high"
Ms. Wang Ning, Vice President of the Chinese Linguistics Society and professor at Beijing Normal University, expressed in an interview that she does not agree with the two lines of thought in society - "restoring traditional characters" or "further simplification". She stated that the cost of restoring traditional characters would be too high, as more than one billion people would need to relearn and rewrite them, making it difficult for them to be widely adopted. In light of the currently fast-paced information revolution, the top priority should be further normalization and standardization of Chinese characters.
