Olympic, wash. - Washington is the latest state to legalize a new flavor of car rental that Oregon and California have already done. Washington's legislature voted to tweak auto insurance rules so you can rent your wheels to friends or strangers when you are not using your car.
Matching renters with nearby car owners, some web-based companies have begun Internet markets. John Aitchison is vice president of a Seattle company called how to cope.
"Under the previous law, it was, it was illegal for car sharing companies to come into the state of Washington," Aitchison said. "That was a very uncertain status meaning that people as car owners who would want to participate might lose their personal insurance."
San Francisco based how to cope recently expanded to Portland. Aitchison says further expansion into Washington state by his company or others could come "pretty quickly."
Washington governor needs to sign legislation and insurance changes will take effect by year's end.
