Every family has to decide how to get everyone to the park. Some who live close debate flying versus driving. For those who fly infrequently, figuring out the ins and outs of air travel brings new challenges. With that in mind, we asked our panel of parents: plane, train or automobile: how do you transport your family to the Disney theme parks? What tips or tricks can you share?
This week, we're happy to welcome some new voices to the group, joining our veteran panelists! Today, we have 2 perspectives on flying to the Walt Disney World Resort. In our next Parenting Panel on March 15th, hear from families who choose to drive to Disneyland and Disney World.
Ren, also known as La, is an engineer, a Disney fan, and a MouseAdventure enthusiast. She lives in the US with her husband and 2 future MouseAdventurers, aged 2 months and 2 years. She writes:
Since moving to Virginia a few years ago, we average one new trip every 2 years to Southern California, always including a visit to Disneyland annually. We fly every time.
Why fly? For California trips, it's fairly obvious. At a distance of 2288 miles, according to my frequent flyer mile balance, it would take up most of our vacation just driving there and back. When we arrive, we either ride with family or friends or rent a car and drive to the park. We usually have other reasons for traveling besides visiting Disneyland, so we need the flexibility of having a car, thus not exploring using shuttles or buses.
When traveling, deciding to fly is a bit more difficult for Ren, but we don't risk taking a 900-mile journey, about a 15-hour drive, with children (under 2). We have reasons to choose flying since the kids are still under 3, so we don't have to spend money on their park tickets. Once the kids grow up, are potty trained, and can handle long car rides more easily, we will most likely become very familiar with Interstate 95.

Flying magic only gets us so far, of course. We're big fans of using Disney's Magical Express to get to our resort in a new way. As members of the Disney Vacation Club, we always stay on property, so the Magical Express is included with no extra charge. They will pick up our checked luggage and take it directly to the resort, leaving our hands free to carry wriggling children.
