At the end of the last century, in the face of China's economy sustaining high-speed growth for more than 20 years, many insightful individuals exclaimed: the 21st century is the Chinese people's century. Not long ago, the Chinese nation carried an unprecedented confidence and a deep desire to integrate into the global economic family, passionately and arduously engaging in WTO accession negotiations.
On December 11, 2001, when the marathon-like negotiations finally came to an end, we discovered that this was not only a golden avenue leading to an ideal country but also a thorny and perilous trap. For China's automobile industry, which was most influenced by WTO rules, just starting out and still wobbly on its feet, opportunities coexisted with risks, yet the risks far outweighed the opportunities. Based on this judgment, "Dancing with Wolves" became the most apt and frequently used adjective in the industry and among Chinese automakers. This term embodied both vigilance and respect towards powerful and greedy international counterparts who coveted China's vast market, as well as the grand aspirations and scientific judgments of all Chinese automakers who were unafraid of difficulties and ready to embrace challenges. In 2001, China's automobile production and sales amounted to merely 2.3 million vehicles. Looking around the world, the United States had long been a massive "crocodile" producing over ten million vehicles annually, while even automobile powerhouses like Japan and Germany were far ahead of us, leaving us no chance to catch up.
"Dancing with Wolves" is a famous American movie directed by Kevin Costner in 1989. Through the story of a soldier's interaction with an Indian tribe during the American Civil War in the 1860s, it portrays the conflict and integration of different civilizations. Over the past decade, through "dancing with wolves," China's automobile industry has undergone tremendous changes akin to transformations from land to sea. Not only have we surpassed our former competitors in quantity and reached the pinnacle of the world's automotive development history, putting on a spectacular show; our self-owned brands have also grown from nothing to something substantial, gradually enriching the capital and skills necessary for "dancing with wolves." The Chinese market is so vast that it has attracted numerous world-renowned automotive giants to view it as the ideal stage to showcase their capabilities. Joint ventures have almost entirely accommodated all passengers eager to mine gold.
In the eyes of some traditional automotive powerhouses, developing the Chinese market has shifted from an optional trial to a decisive strategy without alternative choices. Some once glamorous but now declining automotive brands and companies, lacking development capability and drive, place their hopes for revival on what was once a minor player – Chinese automakers. From the frequent flirtations of Ssangyong and Saab to the successful remarriage of Volvo, each instance demonstrates the strength, charm, influence, and potential of China's automobile industry. Meanwhile, Chinese automakers are stepping out of the country, whether through exports or setting up factories abroad, showcasing the grand ambitions of Chinese automakers looking to the world. Worth mentioning are the increasingly popular auto shows held across the country. Whether it's the bustling crowds or the dazzling array of exhibited vehicles; whether it's the dazzling concepts or the luxurious cars priced in tens of millions or hundreds of millions, they all reflect the flourishing state of China's auto market.
Looking back at the past decade since joining the WTO, we see both hardships and stirring moments, along with persistent exploration and the joy of success. Over these ten years, a large number of seasoned industry elites have matured, and the impetus provided by automotive media and automotive culture has created a grand picture of the automotive world. Reflecting on the past decade since joining the WTO and looking forward to future development, one naturally recalls the story of the phoenix rising from the ashes. According to the Indian epic Ramayana, the phoenix, burdened with worldly suffering, throws itself into the blazing flames ignited by the protector god Vishnu. Reborn from fire and ashes, it becomes a new, beautiful, and glorious phoenix. In Buddhist scriptures, this process of elevation through rebirth is called Nirvana.
Over the past ten years, hasn't the development of China's automobile industry been a complete process of "phoenix rising from the ashes?" During these ten years, we have achieved worthy peaks worth boasting about, but being born in adversity and dying in comfort, there are still many areas that fall short of satisfaction. We must continue to endure long-term, arduous, and challenging "dances with wolves." Of course, based on China's continuously strengthening national strength and the relentless efforts of Chinese automakers, we will undergo "phoenix rising from the ashes" again, even countless times, ultimately reaching the summit of a strong automotive nation where we can "view all mountains as small."
