South China tiger, an endangered species or already extinct. But in 2007, the Chinese mainland was engaged in a heated debate over the South China tiger.
Some people said they had taken photos of the South China tiger and would bet their heads on it. The Shaanxi Provincial Forestry Department even held a press conference, announcing plans to establish a nature reserve, among other initiatives.
The other side claimed that the tiger photos were faked, calling it a "paper tiger" or a "calendar tiger", threatening lawsuits and administrative reviews.
The attitude of the State Forestry Administration was rather ambiguous, not offending either side, be it a real tiger or a fake one. The aim of the Forestry Administration was to prove the existence of the tiger.
