In the post, "Zhang Du" compared himself to the Guangxi version of "Xu Yunhe". He repeatedly regretted helping the elderly man and appealed for society to restore his innocence and fairness. On March 5, a reporter from a Yulin newspaper also published an article titled "Collision or Assistance? Baise Farmer Zhang Du is Recently Troubled" on the Red Bean Community and their personal blog.
On March 7, in the accident inquiry room of the Traffic Police Detachment No. 1 of the Yulin Public Security Bureau, Zhang Du steadfastly insisted that he was not the perpetrator: "I have no regrets about my conscience, Hitokiri Legend Commemorative Park!" To completely break his "defense," the police officers retrieved electronic surveillance footage near the accident scene: The video showed that the involved elderly man collided with the left front corner of a quickly turning minivan while crossing the road, causing him to fall immediately. This offending vehicle turned out to be the one driven by Zhang Du.
This incident drew significant attention from many netizens, some of whom demanded that the traffic police department "return the car to its owner," creating considerable interference for the investigative authorities handling the case. Deputy Mayor of Yulin City and Director of the Public Security Bureau, Xu Jianzhong, also required the traffic police department to quickly uncover the truth, uphold justice, and handle the matter seriously and legally regarding the accusation of assisting a fallen elder.
"At that time, I just thought, 1.85, aren't newspapers and magazines full of stories about heroic acts of bravery? Everyone saw it, the hero was pushed into the river, it wasn't me who knocked him down, so there shouldn't be any problems, right?"
