According to Dear's recollection, her allergy symptoms began at age 16. "When I was 16, I had my tonsils removed," she said, "the symptoms started after that. Aquagenic urticaria is an extremely rare skin condition where patients develop hives on their face, limbs, and trunk within minutes of contact with water during daily activities such as bathing or washing their face. These hives typically subside after a few tens of minutes. According to the Daily Mail, there are approximately 35 people worldwide who suffer from aquagenic urticaria, and there are no known cases of cure.

She used to be a dance teacher but had to quit her job due to allergies caused by sweating. Even though the disease has disrupted her daily life, Dear cannot cry because that would also trigger allergy symptoms.

Dear is currently 26 years old and lives in Flint, North Wales. Due to suffering from aquagenic urticaria, she cannot take baths, swim, or go outside on rainy days. Even a quick shower causes rashes on her body, which only subside after two hours.

According to Xinhua News Agency, British woman Katie Dear suffers from the rare condition of aquagenic urticaria, where her skin is allergic to water, including her own tears. She is unable to live normally and dares not to watch emotionally charged films and literary works.
