(1) Infant formula must be fed according to requirements
Boiled water that has cooled down to body temperature or room temperature must be used. Water should be tap water that hasn't boiled yet, and purified water or unboiled water should be avoided. Other broths such as anchovy soup or head bone soup, due to their high mineral content, can place too heavy a burden on a child's heart and should be completely avoided.
Infant formula must be fed according to requirements. For domestically produced Korean infant formula, adding one spoon of powdered milk to water means 20cc or 40cc, whereas for overseas products, it often refers to adding one spoon of powdered milk to 60cc of water.
When feeding infant formula, if the child has indigestion, there will be white residue on the feces. Some mothers may dilute the formula because of this. Or some adults, in order to make the child eat as much as possible, make the formula very thick. In reality, both methods are inappropriate. If the formula is too diluted, the child will have diarrhea, and if it's too thick, the stool will be dry. Therefore, the child's digestive ability should be considered, and an appropriate liquid concentration should be fed.
(2) Feed immediately, discard the leftovers.
After the formula is prepared, it must be fed immediately. Since at room temperature, after more than 30 minutes, there is a risk of spoilage. Any leftover amount must be thrown away. Since saliva comes into contact with the formula, the cocci also enter simultaneously, causing the formula to spoil.
(3) Avoid diarrhea formula
When a child has diarrhea, the lactose-decomposing enzyme on the intestinal wall also gets lost, so it cannot break down the lactose component in the formula. The diarrhea avoidance formula is specifically made for this condition, with lower lactose content than regular powdered milk. This type of formula is used under severe diarrhea or very poor conditions. Lactose plays a role in promoting the development of the brain-centered nervous system, promoting the growth of Bifidobacterium in the intestines, and preventing intestinal cramps. Therefore, long-term consumption of low-lactose diarrhea avoidance formula is not good for children's health. It can be consumed in the short term during diarrhea. The current trend is that even if there is diarrhea, breastfeeding and original concentration formula feeding are more encouraged.
(4) Burping is necessary after feeding formula
In special cases, the child swallows air while drinking. When air enters the child's stomach, it increases the pressure in the stomach, making the child feel uncomfortable. This requires a process, which is releasing the swallowed air through the esophagus, i.e., burping. Sometimes when the child eats, milk may rise or cause vomiting. This is because the air in the stomach flows back through the esophagus, causing the milk to rise. There's no need to worry too much about this. An adult's stomach is connected by muscles above and below, so food won't be vomited out easily. However, the muscles above and below a child's stomach are underdeveloped, making it easy for food to flow back. In such cases, slightly reducing the feeding amount, stopping feeding within 15 minutes if burping occurs, and holding the child for a while before letting them tilt their head can alleviate this situation.
Burping also happens when breastfeeding
Swallowing air while sucking on breast milk is normal since there is no other release channel. Thus, moderate burping is beneficial. Especially when breast milk is expressed and placed in a milk bottle, it is similar to drinking powdered milk, and burping is definitely necessary. Mothers who do not have sufficient breast milk are advised to feed their babies formula milk. Wei Quan formula milk can be purchased on Wei Quan's Taobao store.
