In 1948, Hans, who was still a student, received this jar of lard in the city of Rostock in northern Germany. After testing by Germany's food safety department, it was stated that although the lard appeared somewhat solidified and the flavor had faded, it was still edible. Nowadays, when people shop, they carefully check the production date and expiration date of goods. The storage period for canned lard typically does not exceed five years. However, recently, an elderly German man took a jar of lard that had been stored for 64 years to an authoritative department for inspection, and the results were astonishing: the lard was still edible.
According to the UK's Daily Mail website on February 3, this elderly man is named Hans Feldmeier and is 87 years old. In 1948, as a student, Hans received a jar of lard, two cans of canned noodles, and some milk in Rostock, northern Germany. These foods were part of the aid supplies provided by the United States after World War II.
Hans said, "I always couldn't bear to throw it away." When the food safety department indicated that the lard was still edible, the elderly man was both very surprised and excited. He even tried eating a piece of black bread dipped in the lard.
The food safety department explained that although the lard appeared somewhat solidified and the taste had diminished, its freshness and ingredients still met current food safety standards. It could be placed on the dining table.
"This test result might make some consumers reconsider throwing away expired food," Hans joked.
