BEIJING, Chongqing, February 21: A terminally ill man in Chongqing asked the police to take care of his daughter and recorded a series of blessing CDs for her 10th birthday. The father, Wong Kwok-chuen, suffering from terminal cancer, entrusted his baby daughter, Huang Rong, to his sister with the help of the police. In the final days of his life, with the police's assistance, he recorded eight blessing CDs for his daughter.
Eight years ago, Wong Kwok-chuen, a man from Dasheng town in Yubei district, broke up with his wife. In 2004, after long quarrels, his wife left without any sound, leaving behind their 2-year-old daughter, Huang Rong, who followed him to live on her own. In 2007, Wong Kwok-chuen was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and needed about 4-5 million yuan for surgery. To save money, he didn't go to the hospital for treatment but continued working while taking medicine.
At the same time, Wong Kwok-chuen and his ex-wife did not complete the divorce proceedings. His daughter’s household registration was still under her mother's name in Chengguan Town, Shapingba District, Chongqing. Now, his daughter lives at his sister's home in the New North Zone of Chongqing, where local schooling registration is very difficult.
The Public Security Bureau of the New North Zone of Chongqing learned about Wong Kwok-chuen during poverty alleviation activities and started funding him 500 yuan per month for living expenses. They also helped his daughter attend a local primary school by contacting the relevant authorities.
In early 2011, Wong Kwok-chuen's disease began to worsen, making it hard for him to swallow food. He could only eat porridge daily and continued to work harder to save money for his daughter's future.
By early February 2012, Wong Kwok-chuen's condition became increasingly severe; even drinking water became difficult, and he could no longer work. Helplessly, he moved to his sister's home. The doctor informed him that he had advanced esophageal cancer and his time was limited.
With the police's persuasion and help, Wong Kwok-chuen was admitted to the hospital for regular treatment to sustain his life. On February 10, 2009, the police handed over Wong Kwok-chuen to his sister's care.
"Police comrades, my life is coming to an end. I don't know how to ask for your help. If I die shortly, please take care of my daughter," said Wong Kwok-chuen. The police assured him that after his death, they would try to contact the local government for his daughter to receive government relief. Meanwhile, the police will pay more attention to Huang Rong's care and growth.
Wong Kwok-chuen, with the help of the police, recorded eight blessing CDs for his 10-year-old daughter and handed them over to the police for safekeeping. The police will give one CD to his daughter each year on her birthday until she turns 18.
He hoped that in this way, his voice and love would continue to guide her through life.
On the CDs, he told his daughter: "Listen to Aunt Wang's words, study hard every day! Shoulder the burden well and prepare for a good fight in exams to enter a good school. Read more books, gain more experience, and only then will you show great promise. When you become an adult, remember to be a useful person and repay those who have cared for you and helped you. Daddy loves you, and I wish you a safe and happy life!"
