The post has three subheadings, namely "A Woman Fell from a Building Naked in the Dead of Night," "The Police Have Identified Three Men," and "Preliminary Determination of Suspected Gang Rape." These are basically the same as the three subheadings in the report by Nanguo Zao Bao, except that "two men" has been changed to "three men;" even the security guard's comment, "What a pity, such a young and beautiful girl is gone," is identical. The account of the incident process, the alarm process, and the police response process are almost word for word the same; the female student involved also shares the surname Liang.
Since it was close to summer vacation, there weren't many students at Shenyang Technician College, and the school order and atmosphere were relatively normal. Several students from Shenyang Technician College told reporters that they hadn't heard of this incident happening at the school; but after seeing the post, they all felt scared. Jin Shuai, a student from the 2009 Numerical Control class, said: "This rumor affects the reputation of the school, and also affects our employment and future." "The online post is completely fabricated, and the negative impact is particularly significant," said Chen Meilan, the director of the office at Shenyang Technician College, angrily.
[Investigation] The police stated that no accidental death cases occurred in the jurisdiction on that day; there were no relevant emergency calls recorded by 110.
Professor He Cun from the Media Development Research Center at Bohai University analyzed that currently, hundreds of millions of internet users obtain information from the web every day, and the network's influence on society is growing increasingly large. However, the cyber society is not virtual, nor will it become a legal vacuum. "Defamation on the internet, if it causes serious consequences, also constitutes the crime of defamation," said He Cun. If people arbitrarily infringe upon others' rights, they may bear civil liability or even face criminal prosecution.
On June 6, a popular online community posted a "news-style" post titled: "Shenyang Technician College Female Student Raped and Then Falls to Her Death, Culprit Turns Out to Be a Teacher From the Same School!" The post claimed that on the morning of June 5, a female student surnamed Liang from the school fell to her death from a hotel in the Huanggu District of Shenyang. Prior to the incident, the woman was invited by the principal to a night snack at a restaurant in Shenyang where she got drunk. Three men then took her back to the hotel and gang-raped her, one of whom was identified as "Principal Wang of Shenyang Technician College." Additionally, the post included a photo of a woman lying in a pool of blood. In a short period of time, the post was widely reprinted on various forums and tieba across the internet, causing a great stir.
I discovered that this less-than-1000-word post, accompanied by two photos, was very similar in plot and writing style to a news report published by Nanguo Zao Bao on April 22 of this year titled "Naked Woman Falls to Her Death Early in the Morning, Was Taken to a Hotel by Two Men Before Her Death."
"Since June 5, the Huanggu District police have not received any reports regarding unexpected deaths of residents, let alone the sensitive case of a female university student dying," Deputy Director Li Qingmin of the Huanggu Branch overseeing the Criminal Investigation Division said, "If someone had fallen to their death, there would be witnesses, informants, or family members and the school reporting the incident, but there haven't been any in these past few days. As the deputy director overseeing criminal cases, if there had been an unexpected death involving a university student, I would have definitely received the first information report. It can be definitively stated that this is purely a fabrication."
Focus One: "Female Student Falls to Her Death?"
[Investigation] The school stated that no female students have experienced such incidents; all parties mentioned in the post are normal.
Focus Two: "The Mastermind Behind the Incident is a Teacher From the Same School?"
In the post, "Principal Wang of Shenyang Technician College" and two other men were "under police control." Shenyang Technician College has two principals surnamed Wang, one male and one female. During my interview at Shenyang Technician College, I learned that Principal Wang Jintang, mentioned as being "under police control," had been functioning normally recently. On the afternoon of June 10, after introducing the situation to reporters, Wang Jintang entertained visiting colleagues from Jinan. The college clarified to reporters that no female students at the school had encountered such incidents.
On the afternoon of June 10, I received news that the suspect who posted the thread had been apprehended by the police. The man is 32 years old, and the specific details of the case are still under further review.
