PVC wallpaper uses a certain material as the base material. It is made through multiple processes, including coating on its surface, and then printing, embossing or foaming treatments. PVC wallpaper is a decorative material that developed in the 1950s. The variety of products keeps increasing, and the output rises year by year. It has become one of the most widely used materials for interior wall decoration. China began to trial-produce PVC wallpaper in the 1970s, and it has now developed into a PVC wallpaper industry of a certain scale. The application of wallpaper is also rapidly popularizing in our country, which promotes the continuous increase in the output and color varieties of wallpaper. PVC wallpapers can be divided into five major categories: printed wallpaper, embossed wallpaper, foamed wallpaper, special wallpaper, and plastic wall fabric. Each category has several varieties, and each variety has dozens or even hundreds of colors and patterns. The above is just the basic classification of PVC wallpaper. In fact, with the improvement of process technology, new varieties are emerging, such as cloth-based, gel-surfaced wallpaper, gel-surfaced wallpaper that is further embossed or printed, and surface electrostatic flocking wallpaper. (I) Raw materials and production processes of PVC wallpaper 1. Raw materials (1) Basic plastic raw materials As mentioned earlier, PVC wallpaper requires resin and other auxiliary raw materials. The resin is mainly PVC. For ease of processing, low molecular weight PVC is generally used. Among the auxiliary raw materials, foaming agents need to be added when making foamed wallpaper. (2) Base paper As the base paper for PVC wallpaper, it is required to be heat-resistant, non-curling, and have a certain strength. It is generally paper weighing 80~100g/m2. 2. Brief introduction of the production process The production process of PVC wallpaper is generally divided into two steps. The first step is to compound a layer of plastic on the base paper (or fabric). There are four methods of compounding. The first method is the calendering method, which directly press-compounds the calendered film and the base paper after the calendering machine. The second method is the coating method. There are two types of coating materials, one is emulsion coating, such as vinyl acetate emulsion; the other is PVC paste. The third method is indirect compounding, which is compounded by a compounding machine. The fourth method is extrusion compounding, which compounds the film extruded from the flat plate machine head with the base paper. Among them, the most commonly used methods are the calendering method and the coating method. The second step is to perform surface processing on the semi-finished wallpaper that has been compounded, including printing, embossing, print-embossing, foam-embossing, etc. Sometimes, these two steps can be completed on one unit, such as directly embossing on the coating unit to obtain embossed wallpaper. (II) Advantages of PVC wallpaper 1. Good decorative effect Since the surface of PVC wallpaper can be printed, embossed, and foamed, it can imitate natural stone texture, wood grain, and brocade, achieving a lifelike effect. Through careful design, patterns suitable for various environments can be printed, almost without limitation. Colors can also be arbitrarily matched to achieve a natural and smooth, light and elegant effect. 2. Superior performance According to needs, it can be processed into products that are flame-retardant, heat-insulating, sound-absorbing, anti-mildew, not easy to condense, water-resistant, and not easily mechanically damaged. 3. Suitable for large-scale production PVC wallpaper has good processing performance and can be continuously produced industrially. 4. Convenient adhesion and construction Paper-based PVC wallpaper can be bonded with ordinary 107 adhesive or white latex glue, and it has good breathability. 5. Long service life and easy maintenance and repair PVC wallpaper surfaces can be wiped, and they have strong resistance to acids and alkalis. For example, the printed coated wallpaper used in the new building of Beijing Hotel showed no abnormalities after artificial aging for 500 hours.
