Sun Wanxiang: Just poor, medical expenses cannot be reimbursed, only recently did I start receiving low-income assistance, 470 yuan per month. I still need to spend 1000 yuan renting a house to live with my son. I need some money to eat, I saw such things (insurance fraud) on TV. The first time was about eight or nine years ago, one night. A taxi came, I really got fractured, the driver gave me a few hundred yuan, treating me like a beggar.
One hour later, he will stand trial. According to the prosecution's charges, from February 2001 to September 2009, at various intersections in the city, Sun Wanxiang deliberately collided with motor vehicles while riding a bicycle in the pedestrian crossing and pretended to fall to defraud 139 people of more than 124,000 yuan. From October last year to January this year, due to physical limitations, his neighbor Li Mou (charged with fraud) drove an electric tricycle to take him and his bicycle to intersections such as Jiaodaokou and Yonghegong to "insurance fraud", defrauding 19 people of more than 10,000 yuan.
Reporter: Will you continue doing this in the future? Sun Wanxiang: No. I appeared on TV, they all point at me and say, it's him, it's him, it's embarrassing.
Sun Wanxiang: About thirty or forty years ago, I worked in a model factory, but it went bankrupt, and I've been unemployed ever since. Later, my wife divorced me, and I have one child who lives with me. He is 28 years old this year, and he hasn't worked for long. Each time he looks for a job, he has to pay a 500-yuan referral fee.
Reporter: How did you come up with the idea of "insurance fraud"? How did you start the first time?
Sun Wanxiang: I go everywhere, the farthest I've gone is Miyun and Yanqing, looking for intersections and targeting taxi drivers. When the drivers turn, their speed is slow, I push my bicycle over and pretend to fall. I initially ask for 5000 or 10,000 yuan, but getting a few hundred is fine.
Finally, the prosecutor warned Sun Wanxiang: "Although you are an elderly person, we hope that wherever you are, whether in a nursing home or elsewhere, you should reflect on the unease caused to the victims and truly repent for your crimes."
Considering his poor health, the court decided to hold the trial at the nursing home. At noon, Sun Wanxiang was pushed into a meeting room by the court officer, and the trial officially began.
The defense lawyer for Sun argued that some accidents were not reported, and there were no traffic accident determination letters, so they could not be used as evidence of guilt. Considering Sun's health condition, the lawyer suggested a lighter punishment.
