Morning: The surveillance footage shows that you entered the company on the third floor at around 11 a.m. and didn't leave until 3 a.m., what were you doing for those four hours? After being apprehended, suspect Tang confessed to breaking into a commercial company in the early morning of January 7th and stealing, without reservation. He also admitted to committing two other home invasion thefts in Xuhui District since arriving in Shanghai on December 9th last year.

Not taking diamonds due to lack of English knowledge

Ms. Wei's commercial company is located on the third floor of a business building on Kexuan Road, mainly dealing in watches, with the office and warehouse on the same floor. On January 6th, Ms. Wei had planned to ship goods but encountered some minor issues during transportation, so she temporarily left the goods inside the company. "Since it was only going to be there overnight, I didn't lock them in the safe."

Morning: What did you plan to do with these stolen goods?

Yesterday morning, the Morning Post reporter saw suspect Tang in the detention center. Tang revealed that he originally intended to sell the stolen watches for a hundred yuan each, but was caught too quickly.

It is understood that Tang is 42 years old and was just released from prison in April last year. On December 9th last year, Tang accompanied a friend to Shanghai for medical treatment, spending his days at the hospital with his friend and searching for theft targets on weekends. Due to unfamiliarity with Shanghai's terrain, Tang could only choose business buildings along major roads. "I generally targeted places with aluminum sliding windows because they can be easily opened with a little force." Tang said he didn't expect the stolen items to be so valuable, but unable to find a way to fence the loot, he gave the stolen branded wallets to his sick friend and used the stolen computer to watch DVDs and play games. "I really liked this teapot, so I used it to drink tea, which ultimately led to my arrest."

After the incident, Ms. Wei immediately reported it to the police. The Xinhua Road Police Station of Changning Branch responded promptly, analyzing that the suspect might have climbed up using the air conditioning units on the first and second floors, entering through the window to commit the theft, then fleeing on foot with the stolen goods. By reviewing street surveillance footage, the police found an image of a man dragging a suspicious suitcase walking in the area where the crime occurred at around 3 a.m. on January 7th, and tracked him to a roadside inn. However, when the police arrived at the inn, they found that the man had already checked out on the morning of January 8th. "He stayed here for about a month, claiming to be accompanying a friend to Shanghai for medical treatment," recalled the inn staff. The police followed this lead, investigating nearby hospitals and locking onto one hospital, determining that the suspect likely disguised himself as a nighttime caregiver, staying within the hospital.

Currently, suspect Tang has been criminally detained by the Changning police, and the case is under further investigation.

Tang: This is an old saying from my hometown, if you defecate after stealing, you won't get caught, but I didn't expect to be arrested by the police the next day.

Early Saturday morning, employees came to the company ready to ship goods but found the room in disarray. Ms. Wei's office appeared to have been ransacked, with drawers of all sizes turned upside down, things scattered everywhere, making it almost impossible to walk. Even worse, the thief defecated at the scene, causing the entire office to stink.

A moment of carelessness loses 2 million yuan worth of property

Yesterday afternoon, the Morning Post reporter met with suspect Tang at the Changning District Detention Center. He is short, with dark skin, a red birthmark on his left cheek, wearing thick cotton clothes and pants, sitting in the interrogation room with a blank expression and a vacant stare.

Changning police remind all enterprises and institutions: to enhance prevention awareness, make sure to close and lock doors and windows when leaving work, especially with the Spring Festival approaching, most employees will go home for the New Year, and before leaving the unit, must carefully check the condition of doors and windows; large amounts of cash should be deposited in the bank, valuable items must be locked in safes that are securely anchored; at the same time, property security or gate guards should strengthen night patrols.

News Morning Post (hereinafter referred to as Morning): Was choosing that building for the crime specifically targeting the stolen company on the third floor?

Tang: After I went in, I found the warehouse full of watches, so I opened every box and took a few out. Then I searched the office, finding plenty of good stuff, opening cabinets and rummaging through things everywhere. Actually, by around 1 a.m., I was almost done, then I played on the computer, drank tea, and smoked in the office.

[Dialogue with the Suspect]

It's him! The police decisively moved in, pressing him down on the bed, successfully controlling the suspect.

Tang: I may have sold the watches randomly somewhere, even for a hundred yuan each, I would have sold them.

One teapot exposes the suspect's identity

When the police returned the ID card and mobile phone to the suspect, Tang bitterly shook his head, "No need, I probably won't use these for over ten years."

After counting, approximately 90 famous brand watches, dozens of precious jewelry pieces, two stamp albums, a teapot, a box of tea, etc., were stolen, along with a dark-colored suitcase, leading Ms. Wei to suspect the thief took the goods in the suitcase. Preliminarily estimated, the lost items were valued at around 2 million yuan. "I should have put them in the safe!" Ms. Wei regretted deeply, her small oversight caused such significant losses.

Within 36 hours, on the evening of January 8th, the thief was finally captured. Seeing the table full of recovered stolen items, Ms. Wei, the manager of the stolen company, couldn't help but burst into tears...
