Buying a New Golf Driver
The world of modern golf drivers available today is absolutely insane. With brands like TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Titleist, Mizuno, Srixon, 2011 Air Jordan shoes, Adams, Cleveland, and Nike offering an endless variety of drivers to choose from, we tend to get lost. I’d like to make it a little bit easier for you to make your great choice by understanding what to look for when buying or selecting a top driver.
You have three main components (there are more factors, but for 95% of today’s golfers, this is irrelevant): the driver club head, the shaft, and the loft of the club head. Now that you have hopefully located the right driver club head for you, the next step should be finding the right shaft. Many of the popular brands in golf (TaylorMade, Air Jordan XI, Callaway, Mizuno, Ping, Titleist, Adams, Cleveland, Cobra, and also Nike) offer a huge variety of shafts that can be mounted on the club head of your choice. With these custom-fit options, you can find one shaft that fits your needs best.
There is an easy way to choose the right shaft, and there’s a hard way. I prefer the easy way. I would say the standard flex of the shaft is probably categorized as X-stiff, stiff, regular, and this should be a rule you follow. So, which flex should you have? Now you have another driver club head that you will be happy with, along with a shaft that suits your swing speed. Once you're fitted for a shaft, you'll likely select a solid loft angle. The reason to focus on the loft of the club is that it can significantly alter your distance and how the ball flies. You need to consider that more loft will give you more carry but won't necessarily increase the overall length of your drive. Is that what you want? You should definitely ask yourself what you need in order to be happy with your driver.
The loft of the club head can sometimes greatly affect the shaft you've chosen. Some shafts cause the ball to fly lower, while similar shafts make the ball fly higher. The key is to choose the shaft that feels good and then adjust the loft accordingly.
The cost of the driver may be more than you expect due to the custom fit options you choose, but this club is the most important one in your bag and can produce fantastic rounds of golf. Keeping this in mind, I would say the driver is probably the most important club in your bag because it provides plenty of confidence and thus helps with the rest of your game.
