□ Correspondent Ruan Zhifang, This Paper's Reporter Huang Miaojun Today is the last day of the National Day long vacation. Before the National Day holiday, a picture about taking leave during the long vacation was circulated online: A little fox showed an expression full of expectation on September 30th, from October 1st to October 6th were expressions of excitement and happiness, while by October 7th it showed a look of complete dejection, which is also the epitome of many white-collar workers.
So, how should we deal with this kind of dejected emotion appropriately?
Many hospitals saw a surge in outpatient visits
During this holiday, the first two days were continuously rainy. Such weather was not suitable for traveling but kept the emergency staff at hospitals very busy, as the sudden cold weather forced these two vulnerable groups in terms of health - the elderly and children - to seek medical treatment in the rain.
From the registration books in the emergency rooms of several hospitals including Zhejiang Xinhua Hospital, I could see that starting from October 1st, the patient records were filled up completely, with daily cases of asthma attacks, abdominal pain, alcohol intoxication, and trauma patients.
Director Zhou Bingzhi of the Emergency Department at Zhejiang Xinhua Hospital said that during the long holiday, the hospital's emergency volume increased by 30-40% compared to normal times. Although the hospital had arranged sufficient personnel, there was still a feeling of being overwhelmed.
A pediatric doctor even composed a limerick about the first three days of the holiday: "On the 1st, raining, the pediatric clinic was boiling; On the 2nd, overcast, hungry stomachs working till one; On the 3rd, night, sleepless shifts are now common. Looking back, leisure and reunion seem far away."
I learned that the first three days of the holiday were the peak period for patient visits. Among them, the elderly mainly suffered from asthma attacks, dizziness caused by high blood pressure, and coronary heart disease. Middle-aged people mostly had gastroenteritis, excessive alcohol consumption, and trauma. Children mostly had colds, fevers, and autumn diarrhea.
From the Affiliated Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University Medical College, I learned that during the holiday, there were a large number of children seeking treatment for respiratory issues, and many experts worked overtime.
Yesterday was the official return-to-work day for major hospitals. Although experts were on duty during the holiday, the emergency volumes in various hospitals still showed varying degrees of surges.
Today, you might want to consider staying home
In recent days, Director Tao Ming of the Clinical Psychology Department at Zhejiang Xinhua Hospital has received quite a few patients suffering from holiday anxiety. Director Tao summarized the main types of patients into three categories: those who recently developed insomnia, those who feel more fatigued after resting, and those with relatively low spirits.
The first group of people mostly traveled extensively during the holiday, trying to make up for all the entertainment they missed out on during regular times, seriously disrupting their usual routines, thus leading to insomnia towards the end of the holiday. For such individuals, Director Tao suggests spending today as a "stay-at-home" day, reducing the time spent going out for fun, properly adjusting their biological clocks, maintaining ample energy, and preparing for work.
The second group expected too much from the holiday, thinking that taking a break would relieve all their stress. However, as the holiday draws to a close, they realize that the pressure hasn't diminished as expected, making them feel more tired the more they rest. Director Tao pointed out that stress is omnipresent, and moderate pressure can actually be beneficial to the body. To truly reduce stress, one must adjust the rhythm of work and life on a regular basis, rather than releasing all stress during holidays.
The third group viewed the holiday as a time for recharging and pushing forward, mainly consisting of students preparing for the college entrance exam and some managers, hoping to make up for the shortcomings in their regular work during the holiday, but without achieving the expected results, thus resulting in feelings of dejection. Director Tao indicated that work is endless, and one must learn to let go, allowing oneself to take a breath when appropriate, and not forcing themselves too much.
Beware of osmanthus allergies during this period
Starting tomorrow, everyone will officially return to work. In addition to paying attention to staggered travel times, office workers should also beware of osmanthus allergies, as this season marks the time when Hangzhou is filled with the fragrance of osmanthus flowers throughout the city.
A few days ago, Mr. Fu, 78 years old, experienced difficulty breathing after his morning exercise and was rushed to the hospital.
"When he arrived, he was having difficulty breathing, with very low oxygen partial pressure," the treating doctor said. After being rescued, Mr. Fu continued receiving treatment in the hospital. "Two years ago, he had an asthma attack due to osmanthus pollen stimulation, fortunately saved by the doctors," Mr. Fu's wife said.
Doctors reminded that autumn is originally a high incidence season for asthma and allergic rhinitis. With osmanthus flowers in full bloom recently, it is easy for people to inhale pollen. Some people with allergic constitutions, especially those with a history of asthma, if they experience chest tightness or shortness of breath, should seek medical attention promptly if symptoms do not subside within a few minutes. If you are someone with an allergic constitution, it is best to minimize exposed skin when going out to prevent allergic reactions.
