After 3-year-old Will Houghton cracked his skull falling down the stairs, family friend Tony Hull responded by inventing CareRails Jr., an innovative "on-stair" safety system designed to make stairs safer for children aged 18 months to 5 years. Within this age group, 50 percent of all home injuries requiring medical assistance are caused by falls. "Many parents allow children to slide on their bellies, bottoms, and knees when first using stairs, but with nothing to hold onto and no way for parents to teach them properly, stairs are serious safety hazards," says Hull. For children ages 1 to 4, home injury due to falls occurs 220 percent more often than cuts, fires, choking, and poisoning combined. "A fall can be a life-changing event," says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing home injuries. Tony Hull and John Houghton co-founded Safeway Systems, Inc. and within 12 months have brought the product from a conceptual rendering to national retailers’ shelves.
