A Mrs. Peng has suffered from one-sided headaches for over 10 years. Recently, she suddenly felt as if "her head was going to explode," her vision became blurry, and she felt the urge to vomit. After a medical examination, it was discovered that she had an aneurysm in her brain. The aneurysm was successfully removed through surgery, which also relieved her long-term headache. Dr. Li Dingzhou, attending neurosurgeon at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, explained that if an aneurysm ruptures, it could lead to fatal cerebral hemorrhage. He advised individuals suffering from severe headaches accompanied by blurred vision to seek medical treatment actively.
Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital held a press conference titled "Battle Against Headaches" yesterday, inviting the aforementioned Mrs. Peng, aged over 50, to share her experience. She mentioned that after the surgical removal of the aneurysm, "my long-standing one-sided headaches were alleviated, and even my knee pain improved significantly. It's wonderful not to endure constant pain."
Dr. Li Dingzhou, who treated Mrs. Peng, stated that if an intracranial aneurysm is left untreated, "it's like having a time bomb in your head. If it bursts, death due to cerebral hemorrhage may occur." Dr. Xiao Zhenlun, attending neurologist at the hospital, added that while the patient's chronic one-sided headaches and the aneurysm were unrelated issues, after surgically resolving the intense pain caused by the aneurysm, "the pain-sensitive areas of the brain finally got some relief, making them less sensitive to pain," which led to the alleviation of both her one-sided headaches and knee pain.
Dr. Jian Zhi Cheng, director of Guo Tai Hospital in Xizhi, advised residents to never endure unusual pains and to consult pain specialists proactively to prevent minor ailments from developing into serious conditions.
Headache Precautions:
- When experiencing a headache, consider taking over-the-counter painkillers to alleviate symptoms but avoid forming habits.
- Don't wait until the pain intensifies before taking painkillers, as their effectiveness will be reduced.
- If the pattern of headaches changes, such as shifting from unilateral to bilateral pain or suddenly becoming severe, attention is required.
- If headaches become so intense that they cause nausea or vomiting, immediate medical care is necessary.
