"The doctor said I was too fat to perform surgery on me," Mrs. Zhang from Laixi said when she encountered trouble at a local hospital while giving birth on her due date. On the 25th, it was learned from the Third People's Hospital that during her pregnancy, Mrs. Zhang gained 100 jin (approximately 100 pounds), reaching a weight of 273 jin (approximately 273 pounds) by her due date. On May 24th, because the patient was too fat, the anesthesia needle could not penetrate to the bone for regional anesthesia, so the doctors had to perform a cesarean section under general anesthesia, delivering an 8-jin (approximately 8-pound) baby boy. Currently, both mother and child are safe.
Gained 100 Jin During Pregnancy
On the afternoon of the 25th, when reporters visited the obstetrics and gynecology ward of the Third People's Hospital, Mrs. Zhang, who had just given birth, lay almost filling the entire bed. "Now both the child and the mother are doing well," Mr. Jiang, Mrs. Zhang's husband, introduced. They come from Laixi but do business in Licang. He is 26 years old, and his wife is 25.
"She ate a lot of fruit during her pregnancy," Mr. Jiang introduced. His wife ate all kinds of fruits during her pregnancy and consumed them in large quantities, eating an entire watermelon in one day. By the seventh or eighth month of her pregnancy, she was eating six meals a day, consuming two steamed buns in one meal. "In these ten months, she gained 100 jin." Mr. Jiang said that before her pregnancy, his wife weighed over 170 jin, and by the time she was about to give birth, she reached 273 jin.
The pregnant woman was too fat for regional anesthesia
"When I saw her, I felt like a giant had stood in front of me," recalled Director Miao Huayan of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Third People's Hospital. On the 23rd, she encountered a very special pregnant woman in her clinic. This pregnant woman was extremely fat, and her body trembled as she walked. Combined with the large belly from her pregnancy, it seemed difficult for her to walk. "She first asked me if we could successfully administer regional anesthesia for a cesarean section," Miao Huayan said.
It was introduced that Mrs. Zhang and her husband had previously gone to a local hospital, but the doctors there said she was too fat to administer anesthesia, so they suggested she go to another hospital.
"Our anesthesia needle is only 10 centimeters long, but the distance from her subcutaneous tissue to the bone is twelve to thirteen centimeters; the needle cannot penetrate," Miao Huayan introduced. Because she was too fat, the needle length was insufficient, making it impossible to conduct regional anesthesia.
"In this case, we can only perform general anesthesia," Miao Huayan introduced. Normally, general anesthesia is not used for cesarean sections because general anesthesia requires the patient to breathe through a tracheal tube instead of autonomous breathing. In such a situation, prolonged use could cause fetal asphyxia, which is very dangerous. However, since Mrs. Zhang could not undergo regional anesthesia, the doctors had no choice but to perform general anesthesia. "We not only doubled the number of staff, but internal medicine doctors and pediatricians were also present," Miao Huayan introduced. Through the efforts of the medical staff, an 8-jin baby boy was delivered via cesarean section. "From the current situation, both the mother and the child have no abnormalities."
Pregnant women should follow a reasonable diet
Miao Huayan introduced that this was the heaviest pregnant woman they had encountered. Fat mothers not only make childbirth difficult but also easily harm the mother and fetus. Miao Huayan mentioned that some people believe that eating more during pregnancy will result in a stronger and healthier baby, but this is not true. Excessive "supplementation" by pregnant women can lead to excessive nutrition, which can then trigger complications during pregnancy.
"Eating too much fruit can also lead to obesity and diabetes," said Zhang Zhanhong of the Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, sharing similar thoughts about overly fat pregnant women. She explained that most fruits contain high levels of sugar, but relatively low amounts of fat and protein. Therefore, excessive consumption of fruit can lead to elevated blood sugar levels in pregnant women. "Reasonable dietary planning is crucial for pregnant women."
Additionally, Miao Huayan reminded that pregnant women should regularly undergo prenatal examinations. The significant increase in Mrs. Zhang's weight also has a certain relationship with not undergoing regular prenatal checks.
