Season for Introducing Breeding Stock:
In principle, breeding stock can be introduced year-round. However, introducing them around the time of Start of Summer is optimal because the breeding centipedes have not yet laid eggs but are nearing the reproductive period. It is easier to determine if the female centipedes are carrying eggs. If identified accurately, the breeding stock may lay eggs shortly after introduction, which accelerates the breeding process. Introducing stock during autumn and winter allows control over the wintering conditions of centipedes, utilizing constant-temperature breeding techniques. Baby centipedes will hatch before spring, and by Start of Summer, they will already be in their growth phase.
3. Evaluation of Breeding Stock Quality:
The quality of breeding centipedes is primarily assessed based on their appearance and behavior. Appearance-wise, breeding centipedes should be intact without any missing limbs or damaged body segments. Their color should be bright and glossy, not rough or dull. They should meet the specific characteristics required for their species. For example, the characteristics of the Lesser Spineless Centipede include a body length of about 11 cm, a golden-yellow head and first dorsal segment, yellow walking legs, and only 2-3 spines on the tail legs. When selecting Lesser Spineless Centipedes, individuals meeting these traits should be chosen. Additionally, individuals with darker heads and walking legs, approaching red, are preferred as they better meet medicinal requirements. The age of breeding centipedes should ideally be four years old, entering adulthood and the reproductive age. During the breeding season, females should show a noticeably enlarged abdomen.
4. Age Identification of Breeding Stock:
Identifying the age of centipedes is crucial for selecting breeding stock. This is because the most suitable reproductive cycle for centipedes is the first one. Smaller centipedes are not sexually mature and cannot lay eggs, while older ones might have already reproduced once or twice and may no longer have strong reproductive capabilities. Therefore, choosing breeding centipedes requires learning how to identify their age. Currently, age identification can only be done based on body length. Before introducing centipedes, it's necessary to understand the relationship between the growth and development age and body length/weight of the intended species. By measuring body length, the age can be estimated. Each species of centipede has its own data correlating age with body length. For instance, under normal growth conditions, Lesser Spineless Centipedes measure 5 cm at one year, 7 cm at two years, 9 cm at three years, 11 cm at four years, 12 cm at five years, and 13 cm at six years. Centipedes reach adulthood at four years, gaining reproductive capability. Therefore, when introducing Lesser Spineless Centipedes, a body length of around 12 cm is preferable.
