How to Build a Centipede Breeding Pool
The centipede, also known as the sky dragon, has high medicinal and economic value. Currently, there are not many sources of centipedes, and artificial centipede breeding is a way for rural areas to become wealthy. Most of the artificially bred centipedes in our country are few-spined centipedes. The following introduces the breeding techniques:
1. Construction of the Centipede Breeding Pool
The breeding pool should be built in a place that is sunny, ventilated, with good wind conditions, yet relatively damp, quiet, and secluded. The breeding pool can be built indoors or outdoors. The breeding pool is constructed using bricks or stone blocks, with cement plastering. The pool depth of 80 centimeters is ideal. The inner walls of the pool are lined with smooth, undamaged plastic film, or a circle of glass is embedded at the mouth of the pool forming a right-angle eaves with the pool wall, about 15 centimeters wide, to prevent centipedes from escaping. Inside the pool, along the walls, dig a water ditch 10 centimeters wide and 4 centimeters deep. On the inside of the water ditch, dig another feeder trough 30 centimeters wide and 3 centimeters deep for feeding purposes. In the pool, miscellaneous grasses and trees can be planted, and some stones and tiles stacked for centipedes to rest. After placing the seedlings, cover the pool with a layer of straw curtains to shade the light. The pool should remain clean, damp, cool, and hygienic.
Living Characteristics of Centipedes
1. Habitat Environment Centipedes fear sunlight, being active at night and resting during the day. They like living in dark, warm, sheltered from rain, and well-ventilated places. They mainly live in low mountain areas with more rocks and less soil. Although they are distributed in plain areas, their numbers are fewer.
Centipedes are an important traditional animal medicine, whose medicinal properties and uses are clearly described in famous medical literature such as Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica." The source of the medicine is distributed in provinces south of the Yangtze River, mainly produced in Hubei and Zhejiang provinces, and the original animals have been identified as few-spined centipedes. According to reports, the main production area in Zhejiang is Hai Ning and Dai Shan in the Jiaxing region. Due to changes in the production environment, over the past one or two decades, the annual catch in the Jiaxing region has decreased from two million to only ten thousand. To increase centipede resources and develop artificial breeding, small-scale indoor artificial breeding and island release experiments have been conducted. In the Zhoushan region, the wild medicinal centipede resources were analyzed, studying their population structure and capture quantities. At the centipede trial breeding site, research was conducted on the biological characteristics of centipedes, observing extensively factors such as egg-laying quantity, egg-laying period, brooding period, egg-eating behavior and re-laying after eating eggs, molting patterns in growth, life cycle, reproductive cycle, dietary habits, etc., providing scientific evidence for artificial centipede breeding. In breeding management techniques, breakthroughs were made in live gender identification and improving hatching rates, accumulating experience in overcoming problems such as mold diseases, drying, and food supply. In 1976 and 1978, adult centipedes were released on Heng Mountain Island twice, and by 1980, observations showed that each generation of new centipedes could grow actively. The island release was successful, indicating that selecting suitable islands for centipede releases is also one of the directions for developing breeding.
