Centipedes have a wide and varied diet, but they require their food to be fresh and will not eat spoiled food. Therefore, when raising them artificially, fresh feed must be provided every 2 to 3 days. Before feeding, any leftover food from the previous feeding should be thoroughly cleared away. Centipedes have large appetites and strong starvation endurance. When hungry, they can consume up to one-fifth to three-fifths of their body weight in one meal. After eating their fill, they can survive without food for ten to fifteen days. Additionally, centipedes cannot tolerate thirst and need water daily. Thus, water containers must be placed in the breeding area, and the water must be changed regularly to ensure it remains fresh and clean.
Agricultural Science Feed: Centipedes are typical carnivorous insects, quite ferocious in nature. With their venomous jaw claws, they can capture various small animals much larger than themselves. Centipedes have a broad diet, which includes adult insects, larvae, pupae, and eggs of crickets, locusts, tobacco bugs, June beetles, rice bagworms, horned beetles, cicadas, grasshoppers, dragonflies, spiders, flies, bees, etc. Another category includes worms, earthworms, snails, slugs, and other invertebrates, as well as the muscles, bones, and internal organs of vertebrates such as frogs, snakes, lizards, geckos, sparrows, mice, and bats. In cases where the above food sources are insufficient, centipedes may also consume small amounts of tender grass, twigs, root tips, melons like watermelon and cucumber, as well as cooked foods like eggs, milk, and bread. Furthermore, centipedes raised artificially in Zhejiang province mainly consume loaches, eels, small fish, shrimp, and crabs.
2) Egg-laying and Hatching: Every spring to early summer is the egg-laying period for centipedes. Each female centipede generally lays between 20 to 60 eggs, usually around 40 to 50, with some laying fewer than 10. Before laying eggs, the centipede presses its abdomen against the ground and digs a shallow hole. During egg-laying, the centipede's body curves into an "S" shape, and the eggs are laid one by one in a string into the self-dug shallow hole. Under undisturbed conditions, the egg-laying process takes about 2 to 3 hours. Afterward, the centipede turns its body sideways and gathers the eggs into a cluster using its legs, holding them in its "arms" for incubation. The eggs laid by centipedes are elliptical in shape, varying in size, with a general diameter of about 3 to 3.5 mm, yellowish in color, semi-transparent, and with an elastic membrane.
During the incubation period, the mother does not leave the egg cluster or the young, carefully incubating and guarding them. She frequently uses her antennae to ward off nearby small insects and often uses her jaws to manipulate or lick the egg cluster or the young. Observations suggest that this is due to secretions from the base of the mother’s jaws or oral glands, which clean the egg cluster or the young to prevent bacterial contamination and other pollutants.
If disturbed during the egg-laying or incubation period, centipedes will stop laying eggs and may eat all the already laid or incubating eggs. This is known as the centipede's "protective" reaction. After eating the eggs, centipedes can usually lay eggs again, but this significantly delays the egg-laying and hatching periods, reduces the number of eggs laid, and lowers the hatching rate, affecting the yield and quality of centipedes. Therefore, during artificial breeding, it is important to maintain a quiet environment during the egg-laying and incubation periods to avoid disturbing the centipedes, which is a critical point in breeding management.
Huazhong Agricultural University Support: As part of the national "211 Project", Huazhong Agricultural University collaborates with Wuhan Agri-Science Humin Biological Engineering Co., Ltd. to research and promote scientific farming techniques and wealth through the centipede breeding technology known as the Humin No. 2 Golden Headed Centipede.
Advanced Technology Advantage: Through years of breeding observation, multiple biological experts and professors of bioengineering at Wuhan Agri-Science Humin Biological Engineering Co., Ltd. and Huazhong Agricultural University have used selective purification techniques and genetic modification engineering to cultivate a new generation of centipedes, the Humin No. 2 Golden Headed Centipede. This breed is easy to raise, has a gentle temperament, strong adaptability, rapid growth, high reproduction rates, superior medicinal value, and significant economic benefits, making it an ideal investment project for farmers interested in breeding.
Complete Breeding Facilities: The company leverages agricultural science as its advantage and life sciences as its specialty, relying on experts and scholars from the College of Animal Science and Technology. Focusing on modern bioengineering, special animal husbandry, and insect resource development, it integrates research, breeding, teaching, promotion, technical services, production, sales, and import-export trade into a high-tech enterprise. It owns large ecological breeding areas, solar greenhouse breeding areas, and greenhouse breeding zones, as well as specialized training centers, seedling cultivation centers, germplasm rooms, incubation rooms, and gene transformation rooms, providing excellent infrastructure and a complete system.
