After Zhang Haigong's son was shot and killed, he was described as a leader of the local mafia in a special program on CCTV. Zhang Haigong believed that CCTV had affected the reputation of his son, so he sued CCTV for an apology and compensation of 200,000 yuan for economic losses. Reporters learned yesterday that, considering Zhang Haigong's actual difficulties, Sichuan Court provided him with judicial assistance, and Zhang Haigong had applied to withdraw the lawsuit.
On March 11 last year, Zhang Haigong filed a lawsuit with Wutongqiao District Court of Leshan City, accusing China Central Television of infringing on the reputation rights of his son Yuan Zhong. Zhang Haigong claimed that on April 2, 2006, his son Yuan Zhong was shot and killed by Li Qiang, Zhang Zhiqiang, Wang Ling and others in Meishan. After the first-instance judgment of the Intermediate People's Court of Meishan, the defendants Li Qiang, Wang Ling and others appealed against the judgment. The Higher People's Court of the province sent the case back to the Intermediate People's Court of Meishan for retrial, and the case is currently under retrial. On January 4 and January 5 last year, the "Tianwang" column of CCTV Channel 12 reported on the case under the title "Meishan Conspiracy", describing Yuan Zhong as "a leader of the local mafia in Leshan, who had been involved in underground lottery and operated an underground casino."
Zhang Haigong believed that CCTV made conclusions about Yuan Zhong's personal character without evidence, damaging the personality and reputation of the deceased Yuan Zhong, and causing great mental pressure and pain to the deceased's relatives, so he sued CCTV.
Considering that Zhang Haigong's son had left behind two young children after his death, and Zhang Haigong himself was unemployed and living in poverty, the court decided to provide appropriate assistance to Zhang Haigong through judicial aid channels to solve his living worries.
On August 3, Zhang Haigong applied to the court to withdraw the lawsuit against CCTV for infringement of reputation rights. (Cheng Yuanyuan, Huang Risheng, reporter Cai Xiaoli)
