At 20:35 on September 9, Zhang, his wife Meng, and their daughter, who had come to Xinjiang from Henan to work, arrived at the waiting hall of Urumqi West Railway Station. Zhang and Meng were preparing to send their daughter back to their hometown. While waiting, the couple began to argue fiercely and then started fighting physically, drawing the attention of other waiting passengers.
Police officer Zhang Qiang, on duty in the waiting room, tried to mediate between Mr. and Mrs. Zhang while dispersing the crowd of onlookers. Both Zhangs were extremely agitated. Officer Zhang Qiang called for assistance via radio to Officer Guo Shengjun who was patrolling on the first floor. The two officers separated the couple and patiently mediated separately.
Officer Zhang Qiang said that after being consoled, Meng on the second floor agreed to go downstairs and reconcile with her husband. As he and Meng walked side by side through the corridor on the second floor, Meng suddenly grabbed the railing with both hands and jumped towards the first floor. Weighing over eighty kilograms, Zhang Qiang rushed forward and, with a quick turn, caught Meng's arm with his right hand just in time. Meng was dangling in mid-air, and both were in a precarious situation. Surrounding passengers quickly came to help Officer Zhang pull Meng back up.
Zhang Qiang said: "I instinctively grabbed her. She weighs about forty kilograms, is thin and petite, a middle-aged woman." He chuckled and added, "It was quite dangerous."
It is understood that the distance from the second floor to the ground floor of the waiting hall is approximately six meters.
Later, after guidance from the police officers at the Urumqi West Railway Station Public Security Police Station, Zhang and Meng realized their mistakes and reconciled.
