Information Times News (reporter Cai Shenglong, intern Liang Zhenxing): Dissatisfied with the compensation plan after her son drowned, Huang Yaxiu from Huazhou climbed up an 8-meter-high tree in Haizhu Square yesterday and demanded to see reporters. After three hours, Ms. Huang was persuaded to get down from the tree by reporters and others.
According to Mr. Liu, one of the onlookers, at around 9 o'clock in the morning, he saw Ms. Huang wearing a child's photograph on her chest, looking very sad. More than half an hour later, Ms. Huang barefoot climbed up an over 8-meter-high tree next to the bus station at Haizhu Square, squatting on the branches sobbing. After the firemen arrived, they laid out air cushions under the tree and persuaded her to come down. "She refused to come down, saying she would wait for the reporters. The firemen failed to persuade her down in two hours."
At around 12 o'clock noon, a TV station reporter climbed up the tree via a ladder to persuade her. Ms. Huang told the reporter that on June 8 this year, her 11-year-old son Huang Zifeng accidentally fell into the water when passing through the log bridge inside the industrial park sewage channel in Huazhou City. Huang Zhihao (12 years old) from the same village jumped into the sewage channel to rescue him. Due to the too rapid flow of sewage and rainwater, both of them drowned.
Ms. Huang believed that the industrial park should be responsible. "In 2005, when the industrial park dug the sewage channel, it cut off the road leading to Hehua Primary School. This road was the necessary way for children to go to school. Besides, before digging the channel, the industrial park promised to build a bridge, but until now, no bridge has been built, only a simple log bridge was constructed, which is dangerous for children to pass."
Ms. Huang said that afterwards, relevant departments in Huazhou City claimed that the industrial park had no responsibility. "Later, the leaders of Huazhou City Petitions Bureau said that they were willing to give the family 25,000 yuan as funeral expenses out of humanitarian consideration." The family disagreed and demanded the industrial park take responsibility. On August 23, the provincial petitions bureau sent the second written notice to Huazhou City petitions bureau to deal with the incident, but there was still no written reply until now.
Yesterday afternoon at around 1 o'clock, Ms. Huang was finally persuaded by the reporter to come down and then was taken away by the police.
