Crime Scene
Chutian Metropolis Daily News, by reporter Guan Qianyu
Due to his dissatisfaction with his lover's insistence on marriage, Li Guangsheng, deputy director of the Yunn County government office in Hubei Province, cruelly strangled his several-months-pregnant lover and then dumped her body into the river under the cover of night. He originally thought that this wrongful relationship would be buried deep in the river forever. However, within half a month, the case was uncovered. After merely two days of investigation, the police successfully solved the case.
Yesterday, according to the Yunn County police, Li Guangsheng was criminally detained on suspicion of intentional homicide. Yesterday, the Yunn County Party Committee issued a document dismissing Li Guangsheng from his positions as deputy director of the county government office and standing deputy director of the county administrative center.
Case Occurrence: A Pregnant Woman's Body Floats in the Han River
Villager Chen Xulin was one of the first eyewitnesses to spot the floating body in the river. He said that the first person to discover the body was a boat owner surnamed Sun. At around 5 PM on December 8th, while dragging sand from the river, he spotted the floating body and immediately reported it to the police.
Chen Xulin and many villagers nearby saw that the deceased's hands and feet were bound with white electrical wire, and a jute bag floated beside her on the water surface.
According to another villager, two days before the incident, he vaguely saw something white on the water surface. Due to the strong river wind and cold weather, he did not investigate what it was.
The Yunn County police quickly formed the "12.8 Special Task Force," with Deputy Director Wu Quanhua and Captain Wang Gang of the criminal investigation team arriving at the scene to conduct investigative work.
Upon investigation, the deceased woman was identified as Ms. Li, aged 34, an employee of a certain unit in Yunn County who had been divorced for many years.
After autopsy, it was determined that Ms. Li was several months pregnant with twins.
Shock
The murderer is an official: Is it a revenge killing or a love-related murder?
Through checking the victim's phone messages and call records, the police quickly locked onto the suspect Li Guangsheng.
On the morning of December 10th, the police knocked on Li Guangsheng's door. In front of the investigators, Li Guangsheng remained very calm, obediently putting on handcuffs as if he had anticipated this day long ago.
At 46 years old, Li Guangsheng is the deputy director of the Yunn County government office and also the standing deputy director of the county administrative service center, overseeing the county administrative service center's operations. His home is located in Chengguan Town of Yunn County. His wife is a mid-level cadre of a certain bureau in Yunn County, and their child is in the first year of university. To outsiders, they appeared to be a happy family of three.
Upon interrogation, Li Guangsheng confessed to the crime without reservation and soon admitted to the facts of the murder and the disposal of the body.
Motive: Killing to Escape the Lover
Li Guangsheng confessed that since last year, he had established a lover relationship with Ms. Li. Because Ms. Li was divorced and single, there were fewer obstacles in their interactions, and everything went smoothly.
However, starting from the second half of this year, Ms. Li discovered she was pregnant. Her attitude changed; she frequently approached Li Guangsheng, demanding either divorce and marriage or 2 million yuan to settle the matter, asking him to give her an explanation. She even threatened Li Guangsheng, stating that if he didn't accept her conditions, she would report him to his workplace.
Li Guangsheng neither wanted to break up his own happy family through divorce nor could he come up with such a large sum of money for compensation. As a result, they often quarreled over this issue.
On the morning of November 20th, Li Guangsheng was going to Shiyan city for business when Ms. Li found him. In the car, they quarreled again. When Li Guangsheng attempted to drive away, Ms. Li grabbed the steering wheel to stop him. During the struggle, Li Guangsheng lost his temper and furiously strangled Ms. Li's neck until she stopped moving.
That evening, Li Guangsheng used electrical wire to bind Ms. Li's hands and feet, placed her body in a jute bag, added large stones, and drove about 30 kilometers from Chengguan to Duh River Bridge. Under the cover of darkness, he threw the body into the river.
It was learned that the vehicle used in the crime was a private car Li Guangsheng bought himself a few months ago. He often drove Ms. Li to Shiyan city to gather with friends.
According to acquaintances of Ms. Li, she lived up to her name—small, delicate, and very beautiful. A cadre even planned to introduce her to his younger brother.
Insider Information: Sending Text Messages to Take Leave Pretending to Be the Victim
It was learned that after committing the murder, Li Guangsheng still sent text messages to take leave from Ms. Li's workplace using her phone, deliberately diverting attention.
In the morning of yesterday, Ms. Li's older brother introduced that on the morning of November 20th, Ms. Li sent her son Hua Hua (a pseudonym) to her older brother's home, asking him to help take care of the boy.
At around 5 PM on November 21st, when Ms. Li's older brother returned home, he let Hua Hua use his own phone to call his mother and ask when she would return. The call was answered by a woman who said: "I am your mother's classmate. We're having dinner at the Yunxian Binyue Hotel. You should come too, and we'll pick you up."
Ms. Li's older brother heard that it wasn't his sister's voice. Worried about letting his nephew go, he called his sister using his own phone. This time, a man answered.
"Where is my sister?" "She went out to buy alcohol." The man replied. "Can you have my sister call me back when she returns?" However, the man immediately hung up the phone. Calling again revealed the phone was turned off. Afterwards, no matter how many times they tried, the phone remained in a call reminder state.
Ms. Li's mother became very worried about her daughter's safety and went to her workplace to inquire. The unit's responsible person showed her a leave request text message signed by Ms. Li, which was sent at 7:43 AM on November 22nd under Ms. Li's name: "I'm leaving for a long trip due to personal marriage matters and need to take a week off. They have a big company and want me to see if I can work there. Their car left hastily, so I couldn't personally ask for leave. I will report details upon returning."
Ms. Li's older brother and mother felt relieved.
Unbeknownst to them, this was a smokescreen set up by Li Guangsheng to mislead.
On the afternoon of December 9th, when hearing that the police had salvaged a female body in Liupi that day, Ms. Li's older brother immediately had an ominous feeling. Upon rushing to the public security bureau for identification, it was confirmed to be Ms. Li's body.
Ms. Li's older brother said that until the case occurred, their entire family had never heard about any relationship between his sister and Li Guangsheng. "Now thinking about it, I am really terrified," Ms. Li's older brother said. Hua Hua is already 10 years old and might know the relationship between Li Guangsheng and his mother. Initially, Li Guangsheng inviting Hua Hua over was likely with ulterior motives.
Personality: Superb Psychological Quality
In recent days, Li Guangsheng's murder and disposal of the body has become the focal topic of street gossip in Yunn County.
In the morning of yesterday, at the Yunn County Administrative Service Center, Li Guangsheng's office on the second floor was tightly locked. When someone looked for Li Guangsheng, several staff members appeared very surprised: "With such a major event happening, you don't know yet? He killed someone, has confessed, and won't be coming back."
In several agencies in Yunn County, several cadres expressed shock and regret during interviews with reporters. In everyone's eyes, Li Guangsheng was very simple, quiet, and well-liked. "We are all very shocked!"
A government official familiar with Li Guangsheng said that after the incident, he continued to go to work normally, read newspapers, tell jokes, and act as if nothing happened. "This person really has incredible patience and superb psychological quality."
