Jiujiang, February 23 (reported by Liu Zankun, Gong Jun and Wang Lianghong) -- On February 23, we learned from the Lushan District People's Court of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, that the shocking case in which a girl was kept as prisoner with iron chains that drew nationwide attention had been sentenced in its first trial recently. The court sentenced the defendant Yang Feng to one and half years in prison for unlawful imprisonment.

Upon investigation, the defendant Yang Feng, male, 38 years old, unemployed, from Duchang County, Jiujiang. From September 8, 2010 to September 14, Yang Feng took two illegally adopted six-year-old girls, named Baby and Beibei, to Room 504, Unit 3, Building 8, Sakura Garden, Lushan District, Jiujiang City (unfinished apartment without water or electricity). During the day, he locked them in the bathroom of the room with iron chains, and at night, they slept on the floor. He only provided them with food and drink to sustain their lives every day.

On September 14, the two locked-up girls attempted to climb out of the window and were discovered by the staff of the residential area. After the property management personnel opened the door, what they saw shocked them: Two dirty little girls were locked on the indoor pipes with two iron chains over one meter long, and the room emitted an unpleasant smell.

In the afternoon of that day, the policemen of the Lushan District Public Security Bureau quickly intervened in the investigation, rescued the two girls, and sent them to the welfare home.

A policeman who participated in the rescue on the day of the incident recalled that the food in the electric pot next to the two girls made people "nauseous". "This doesn't look like something humans eat, and the drinking water next to the children was also turbid."

On February 21, the Lushan District Court of Jiujiang made the first trial judgment on this case. The court believed that the defendant Yang Feng locked up the two illegally adopted girls with iron chains, depriving the girls of their personal freedom, which constituted the crime of unlawful imprisonment. The prosecution charged the defendant Yang Feng with unlawful imprisonment, the facts were clear, the evidence was sufficient, and the charge was established.

The court believed that since the defendant Yang Feng voluntarily surrendered to the public security organ after being summoned and truthfully confessed his crimes, he had the circumstances of surrendering himself, and could be given a lighter punishment according to law. Therefore, the court made the above judgment in accordance with relevant provisions of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China. (End)
