Beijing Morning Post (reporter Xin Wu) - Mr. Hu was found dead after spending the night at an internet cafe playing games. The next morning, his death was confirmed. His family subsequently sued the internet cafe for compensation including maintenance, child support, and death benefits totaling over 400,000 yuan. Recently, the Xicheng District Court ruled against the plaintiff's claims. However, the defendant, the internet cafe, voluntarily offered a compensation of 20,000 yuan to the plaintiff.
On February 22nd at 7 PM this year, Mr. Hu went to the internet cafe located on Jiaozi Alley to play games. The following morning, his wife received a notification from the police informing her of Mr. Hu’s death at the internet cafe. She stated that according to the forensic pathologist's report provided by the police, Mr. Hu had died suddenly due to unknown causes.
Ultimately, the court determined that the cause of Mr. Hu's sudden death was unclear. After the incident, relevant authorities inspected the internet cafe and found no issues. The court concluded that the internet cafe did not act negligently in its operations and had fulfilled its reasonable duty of care within the limits expected. The internet cafe further stated that out of humanitarian considerations, it would voluntarily compensate the plaintiff with 20,000 yuan, a decision to which the court did not object. Therefore, the court dismissed the claims made by Mr. Hu's family.
