In the "Shiben", there is a record of "Du Kang made alcohol", with a note saying "a person from the time of the Yellow Emperor." The "Jiugao" also records: "The origin of alcohol began with the Upper Emperor." This shows that during the time of the Yellow Emperor, the Du family name already existed. According to legend, Du Kang was the Yellow Emperor's food official (the official in charge of the diet). The place where the Yellow Emperor lived, "Xuanyuan Hill," is located in today's Xinzheng, Henan Province. Xu Shen said in the "Shuo Wen Jie Zi": "In ancient times, Shao Kang first made brooms and sorghum wine. Shao Kang is Du Kang." Shao Kang was the sixth-generation king of the Xia Dynasty, residing in today's western Henan Province. Therefore, if we say that Du Kang is the ancestor of the Du surname, then this surname has at least four to five thousand years of history. However, due to the long span of time, there is a lack of written records about the lineage after Du Kang, and some books on surnames have other explanations for the origin of the Du surname.
