Oriental Daily News, May 23: According to the Oriental Morning Post report, recently some female students at East China University of Science and Technology's Yan'an Road campus have been feeling uneasy when walking alone at night.
This is because there has been a sighting of an unidentified strange man. Multiple female students told the reporter that two weeks ago they had heard rumors about a "pervert". A text message sent by a counselor circulated among the students: Attention girls, forward this urgent notice from the school security office: Recently, multiple female students have reported that on the Yan'an Road campus there is a 1.65 meter tall man who claims to be Japanese, specifically targeting female students for small talk, behaving rather strangely. Please students take note and strengthen your self-protection. If you encounter any situation, please immediately report it to the security office. Meanwhile, the security office has already increased patrols around the campus.
Who exactly is this strange man? The accounts of many eyewitnesses roughly outline his behavior: the short man usually appears at night, silent, communicating with female students by typing messages on his phone, generally saying he can't find a place he needs to go, then using reasons like "I am Japanese" or "I can teach sign language" to detain the female student. Due to his strange behavior, some female students fled after a brief exchange and reported it to the security office.
But who exactly is he, and why is he acting so strangely, remains a mystery.
Last weekend, he was caught.
Netizen "Pan Jiaolei" wrote on Weibo on the evening of the 21st that before 8 PM, a man claiming to be a Japanese international student lured a female student into the third teaching building, attempting sexual assault. "The girl asked us for help, the male students in our class together captured him, and reported it to the police for handling. This beast is said to have committed multiple offenses, everyone should be more vigilant in the future."
A school security guard later confirmed the account on Weibo.
Around the third teaching building of Donghua University's Yan'an Road campus, there is a large greenbelt, and the nighttime lighting is not very good. The incident happened in a meeting room on the fourth floor with a roll-up door.
According to a staff member of the school, this man is short, "he seems very familiar with the campus terrain, these past two weeks we've been monitoring his movements."
A security guard assisting the police investigation said that the man first pretended to be deaf-mute, writing questions on his phone or a piece of paper, then showing it to the girl, using the excuse that he couldn't find the place he needed to go, seizing the opportunity to commit sexual assault against the female student.
After the incident, the police took the suspect man to the fourth floor of the third teaching building for evidence collection and investigation. Yesterday, after identification, the man was indeed a 19-year-old Sichuan native deaf-mute person, not affiliated with Donghua University, and without legitimate work in Shanghai. The police stated: "At a supermarket near Donghua University, he tricked a young woman's trust by requesting her to show him the way. When the two reached the entrance of a teaching building on campus, the man suddenly grabbed the young woman's arm, forcibly dragging her into an idle empty room inside the building intending to commit violence. Fortunately, the woman managed to escape while he wasn't paying attention, and with the help of students studying inside the building, the man was captured."
The woman who almost fell victim to him that evening was not a Donghua University student, but a young female teacher from another school. "This female teacher is only about 22 or 23 years old, she was purely kind-hearted helping him find the way," an insider revealed.
At 1:35 AM yesterday morning, the young man suspected of sexually assaulting the woman was taken away from the Donghua University campus by the police.
Currently, the criminal suspect has been criminally detained, and the police have also hired a sign language teacher to assist in investigating the case.
