Yesterday, at the Huai Bai Flower, Bird, Fish, and Insect Market in Shijiazhuang City, a Brazilian turtle was picked out from many other turtles by the stall owner and placed in a "private room." This approximately 10 cm long "two-headed turtle" has two heads that are almost identical in size. Both heads have complete eyes, noses, and mouths. Another difference from other turtles is that its back spine is prominently raised.
The two heads of the "two-headed turtle" are almost the same size.
Professor Ruiyong An from the College of Life Sciences at Hebei Normal University stated that this is a deformed turtle. The cause could be that it was originally a double-yolk egg during incubation, or it might have been infected during development, or it could be due to inbreeding. The exact reason cannot yet be determined. There may be situations where both heads eat simultaneously or only one head eats. "As long as it doesn't affect the functioning of the heart, it can live just like a normal turtle."
Mr. Yi, the stall owner, has been engaged in fish and insect trading for about eight to nine years. "When I received a batch of turtles early in the morning, I found this two-headed turtle inside," Mr. Zhang introduced. The estimated age of this turtle is about three years old. When feeding it, both heads can stretch out simultaneously, and both mouths eat food at the same time.
