2011 June College Entrance Exam Geography Review Guide: Focus on Textbooks

Through a certain amount of practice, students should continuously summarize and conclude to improve their review efficiency. Li Wenbo believes that by doing exercises, candidates can enhance their answering speed and skills on one hand, and familiarize themselves with the college entrance exam question-setting ideas by studying recent exam questions on the other hand. However, it is important to note that doing exercises blindly is not recommended; instead, students should selectively pick typical questions for training and combine textbook knowledge to summarize and conclude key points within these typical questions, thereby strengthening their grasp of related knowledge points. Generally, students are encouraged to do past college entrance exam questions, especially those from Hainan Province since 2007. Teacher Li said that questions from other provinces could also be used for practice, but too much time shouldn't be spent on particularly difficult questions. The difficulty level should be moderate and suitable for our province's examination situation.

Pay Attention to Self-Organization, Find Blind Spots and Difficulties

For the main knowledge points required in the examination syllabus, during the second round of review preparation, students must return to the textbooks again. This return is different from the comprehensive review we did in the first round. This time, we require students to return with targeted objectives. Teacher Li said. After the first round of review, students generally have an understanding of their weak knowledge areas, then through appropriate training, they can find their difficulties, and combined with the teacher's teaching experience, students can identify the key areas to focus on for the second round of review and conduct targeted training. It is very important to pay attention to self-organization, organizing your own knowledge blind spots and difficulties under the guidance of teachers. Teacher Li said that for the main knowledge point training, basically a topic-based training format is adopted. This requires students to carefully and comprehensively review and preview relevant content before the topic-based training, and then proceed with practice based on this. Summarizing the topic-based training is very critical for students, as it allows them to understand their knowledge blind spots and summarize their problem-solving techniques and abilities.

From the perspective of the 2011 College Entrance Exam Examination Syllabus and Test Instructions, there has been little change in the geography subject regarding the examination content, student capabilities tested, or the exam question types compared to last year. Teacher Li said that the test paper includes mandatory content and optional content. The mandatory content includes the compulsory education part and three high school elective modules, while the optional content includes "Tourism Geography", "Natural Disasters and Prevention", and "Environmental Protection" three modules.

According to the examination instructions I learned from this year’s geography subject, the instructions clearly require the college entrance exam questions to reflect the three-dimensional curriculum goals of knowledge and skills, process and methods, emotional attitude and values. The focus is on recognizing and understanding various geographical phenomena and features on Earth from spatial and ecological perspectives, as well as the interaction between humans and the environment. It emphasizes the application and development of geographical skills and abilities, and the use of geographical knowledge and skills to seek welfare for humanity, nations, and regions.

Particularly, it places great emphasis on assessing the core geographical abilities and views of candidates. Teacher Li said that core geographical abilities include: keen awareness of geographical spatial patterns, the ability to analyze, imagine, and make basic predictions about geographical processes, geographical information processing abilities, and the ability to use geographical knowledge, methods, and skills to solve practical problems. Core geographical views include: human-environment coordination views, sustainable development views, and geographical spatial views. The cultivation of these abilities and views runs throughout the entire senior high school review and preparation process, which is not something achieved overnight. Students need to constantly summarize and accumulate during their regular study and training. Teacher Li said that according to Haizhong's review plan, the first round of review will end at the end of this month, immediately transitioning into the second round stage of review.

During the sprint review and preparation phase of the second round, students must strive to break through their difficulties. According to Teacher Li's introduction, Haizhong places great importance on students' basic knowledge learning. The scheduled time is from when they entered senior high school last year until March this year, excluding vacation time, which is roughly more than half a year. During this half year, we need to go over all the knowledge points according to the requirements of the examination syllabus, ensuring coverage of everything. Teacher Li said that we constantly remind students during their regular study and training to pay attention to cultivating their spatial sense and ecological concepts, which are the abilities tested every year in the college entrance exam.

Do Not Neglect Basic Knowledge, Do Not Overemphasize Difficult Points

In last year's college entrance exam, there was a question about the massive volcanic eruption in Iceland, which tested basic knowledge. In subsequent test analysis, many candidates lost points on this question, fully reflecting students' lack of firm grasp on basic knowledge. Teacher Li said that after the first round of basic review, many students no longer put effort into basic knowledge but instead focus more on difficult points. We do not advocate overemphasizing difficult points, and more basic questions should be practiced during regular training. Teacher Li said.

From each year's college entrance exam geography test papers, it is evident that hot topics will have varying degrees of penetration. How to deal with hot topics, Teacher Li said: "We never guess hot topics. For current hot issues such as the Japan earthquake, we guide students to use their learned geographical knowledge to analyze such geographical phenomena. The purpose is to train students' ability to apply geographical knowledge. During this process, students must be told how to achieve specific analysis for specific problems, and they must train their knowledge transfer abilities." For example, there was once a college entrance exam question about urban rainwater flooding, asking students to analyze the causes of urban rainwater flooding. Many candidates only considered weather factors and did not consider the impact of urban planning. This knowledge transfer ability must be cultivated by students during regular training.

Emphasize Current Affairs Hotspots, Pay Attention to Hainan Elements

In this stage of review, Li Wenbo believes that students should cultivate their geographical abilities from aspects such as the application of basic knowledge, selection of material information, and linking theory with practice. First, emphasize the application of geographical knowledge and skills. This includes the cultivation of reading maps and drawing charts abilities, handling table information data, and examination skills. Students must have a map in mind and chest. Candidates must move hands and pens more often, strengthening the cultivation of examination skills and geographical thinking abilities. Only by using both hands and brain can the knowledge they have mastered be consolidated. Second, emphasize the application of geographical information abilities. Most questions in the geography test paper come with diagrams or tables, requiring candidates to collect useful information (such as geographical location, natural, humanistic, and other visible or invisible geographical information) from the charts and use geographical information to answer questions. Fully exploit the stem of the question, and on the basis of thoroughly understanding the explicit information provided by the stem, fully excavate the implicit information contained in the stem to ensure the completeness of the answers. Finally, link theory with practice. Candidates should normally pay more attention to geography in life, geography around them; pay attention to current affairs hotspots, and pay attention to the Hainan elements in hot issues. For example, international tourist islands, Wenchang satellite launch center, Changjiang nuclear power plant, Hainan ecological island, East Ring Railway, etc., should have a certain degree of understanding. Only when the college entrance exam questions originate from life and solve practical problems can they remain vibrant.
