Several Korean dramas with less than ideal ratings have found new life abroad. KBS's water and wood drama "Three Dads One Mom", moon and fire drama "Strong Rivals", and daily drama "Unstoppable Marriage" have all signed agreements to sell their broadcasting rights to foreign television stations. This has given the KBS station, which has been at a loss over its low ratings, new hope.
The first drama to bring smiles to the faces of KBS was the moon and fire drama "Strong Rivals". "Strong Rivals" had already signed sales agreements with television stations in Singapore and Vietnam before it even aired. Following "Strong Rivals", the drama "Three Dads One Mom" starring Jang Hyuk and Yoo Jin was successfully sold to a Philippine station after receiving great reviews at the "MIPTV 2008" in France. The successful export of "Strong Rivals" and "Three Dads One Mom" can be attributed to the popularity of the female leads in these dramas. Lead actress of "Strong Rivals", Song Yoon-Ah, enjoys high popularity within the Asian region. Her influence in Asia is not to be underestimated and her popularity has certainly helped "Strong Rivals" travel overseas. As for "Three Dads One Mom", lead actress Yoo Jin has a certain number of fans in the Philippines, which is why a Philippine television station readily signed on the dotted line thanks to her involvement. For "Unstoppable Marriage", its successful export came as a surprise. The cast of this drama wasn't particularly strong, with none of the actors being top-tier stars in Korea. Moreover, "Unstoppable Marriage" had a lengthy run of 140 episodes, factors that made it less favorable. Yet, this drama found new hope in Japan and Vietnam.
Most of the dramas produced by KBS are exported to other Asian countries. It can be said that Korean dramas have a certain level of influence in the Asian market. However, recently, Korean dramas have been facing strong challenges from American and Japanese dramas. In response, some industry insiders in Korea have pointed out that Korean dramas need to find ways to maintain their popularity in Asia while also actively exploring the markets in America and Europe.
