The story is outlined by the 'wits battle between police and thieves,' beginning with an incident where 'drug criminals' money was robbed. Detective Yang Jiang (played by Ma Dezhong) bravely captures the drug criminals, earning great merit but failing to recover the stolen money. Meanwhile, on the other side, the gang of thieves led by Zhe Gao (played by Liu Songren) successfully plans and executes the robbery of the stolen money.
As Yang investigates Zhe, he discovers that Zhe might be the mastermind behind a bank robbery case five years ago, in which Yang's mentor died in the line of duty. Yang uncovers that there are hidden truths about the robbery case, revealing the reality of his mentor's transformation from policeman to thief.
While confronting Zhe, Yang also has to face other serious criminals. When "Originally Falling for a Thief" reaches its grand finale, Yang struggles with not having enough evidence to legally convict these criminals and witnesses the victims' suffering, driving him to the brink of madness.
