The urban emotional drama "Longing Tree", which concluded on CCTV-1 last weekend, although it did not feature big-name stars, has caused a huge response among audiences. After the entire series ended, viewers continued to discuss various aspects such as the love storylines in the drama, the female protagonist's suicide, and the male protagonist's tolerance.

"Longing Tree" mainly tells the intricate emotional entanglements of modern men and women. Without dramatic twists, it portrays poetic and delicate emotions. The biggest breakthrough and also the most controversial aspect is the creation of characters like Kang Kai who understands love and knows how to be forgiving, Shang Jie who lives in an ideal world, and Xiao Xiao Mu who bravely acts out of gratitude. The director of this drama is Sun Zhou, who has been away from the screen for 23 years. His successful experiences in character shaping and shooting techniques may bring some inspiration to urban emotional dramas.

Controversial Characters >>>

Female Lead: "A Spiritual Aristocrat"

What first caught the audience's interest in "Longing Tree" was the female lead, Shang Jie. Played by Chen Shu, radio hostess Shang Jie is a tragic figure who is inherently kind but becomes involved in an affair due to her dissatisfaction with the status quo, eventually leading to her tragic end. Her actions such as fleeing her wedding, having an extramarital affair, and excessive drinking clearly contradict the image of traditional Chinese women. Her eventual suicide not only boosted ratings but also made many viewers sigh - previously, there was much controversy about this woman, but at this moment, all that turned into tears of sympathy and understanding.

Chen Shu portrayed this slightly neurotic character very well. She interpreted Shang Jie as "a spiritual aristocrat," whose personality cannot be simply summarized in words. "Distinctive personality, tumultuous fate, not so down-to-earth, so it might make the audience feel somewhat distant, including myself. But after entering this character's mind, I started to gradually accept her, sympathize with her, and love her."

In previous domestic dramas, there were rarely such 'alternative' female images. In fact, such women are not uncommon. Their escape stems from anxiety about real life and fear of a passionless life. Although Shang Jie's storyline ends halfway through, this character adds more depth to "Longing Tree" for thought.

Male Lead: "Urban Version of Xu Sanduo"

Compared to the female lead initially being criticized for being too irresponsible towards her feelings, the male lead Kang Kai, played by renowned actor Wu Xiubo, was criticized and questioned by the audience for being too kind and generous. Some viewers believed that when facing his wife betraying him, Kang Kai showed nothing but tolerance and selflessness. Even when Shang Jie returned to him battered and bruised, he forgave and accepted her without hesitation, which seemed too naive and lacked manly spirit.

When filming began, Wu Xiubo himself couldn't believe there could be such a good man, but director Sun Zhou had a clear concept - this was an urban version of Xu Sanduo. He hoped to magnify the goodness within people. "I intuitively felt that the common folk would like this character. Society is so restless now, and when everyone is chasing money together, aren't we losing something? Besides making money and eating, can't we also embrace many other things?"

Screenwriter Gu Weili explained: "From Kang Kai, we can see a man's courage and sentiment of tolerance and responsibility. I think this is truly a great love, a love that transcends the mundane and is full of compassion. Who says that love only consists of impulse and passion?"

Supporting Male Character: Pure "Third Party"

In addition to the creation of the main characters, which overturned the traditional urban drama model, other supporting characters in "Longing Tree" also saw breakthroughs. Generally, urban emotional dramas often depict young and beautiful women as the "third party," often portraying them as passionate and willing to sacrifice everything for love without considering the consequences. The drama gives them not condemnation, but increasingly respects and sympathizes with them as symbols of passion or even humanity.

However, "Longing Tree" features a male "third party." Moreover, Liao Fan's portrayal of the "third party," Dongfang Lingxiao, is a purely selfish lover never seen before in television dramas. Irresponsible towards love, he passionately pursued Shang Jie but then abandoned her. The audience no longer feels any sympathy or leniency towards this character. He is no longer a symbol of sensuality or desire; he is a pure "third party," representing someone who takes no responsibility in matters of the heart.
