In 1991, Xiao Xiaomu, who lived in the mountains of Yunnan, dropped out of school due to poverty at home and left all the tuition fees provided by Shanghai college student Kang Kai to her younger brother Xiao Xiaopu. She stayed at home with her mother doing petty trade. For this, Xiaomu felt very guilty, feeling that she had failed to meet Kang Kai's expectations.
