From last year's "Palace of Desire" to this year's "Dae Jang Geum", TVB can be said to have won a big victory, causing a craze of viewership. Starting from 22:00 tonight, they will continue to present the Japanese historical drama "Great Inner Palace", focusing on the power struggle in the harem. TVB will broadcast all 25 episodes of "Great Inner Palace Chapter One", "Great Inner Palace Chapter One Special Edition", "Great Inner Palace", and "Great Inner Palace Meiji Edition", determined to keep the theme of women dramas ongoing.

"Great Inner Palace" can be considered the Japanese version of "Palace of Desire", filled with plots of women scheming against each other. Given the previous two palace dramas were very popular, TVB purchased this series, originally scheduled to air after "Dae Jang Geum" in May, but was temporarily replaced by "Medicinal Way", the male version of "Dae Jang Geum". However, "Xu Jun" did not perform well, disappointing TVB greatly, with ratings hovering below 30 points, even affecting the reception of other two dramas. After "Devotion to Life 3", TVB also wanted to change the viewer's taste, hoping to create another peak in viewership with women dramas.

The most popular period drama in recent years

"Great Inner Palace" started airing in Japan two years ago, achieving an impressive success with its highest rating reaching 22 points, breaking the stereotype that period dramas have poor ratings, entering the top 10 list of Japanese dramas in 2003. The station took advantage of this success, launching the second prequel and special edition last year, starring renowned actresses such as Yuki Matsushita and Asa Setouchi, targeting female audiences aged 20-50. Moreover, novels and manga versions were also released, gaining immense popularity just like the original drama. Lead actress Miho Sugino became the second actress, after Nanako Matsushima (who starred in "Hideyoshi and Kichi"), to win the Best Actress Award at the Japanese Drama Academy Awards for a period drama.

Evil women vying for power

"The Great Inner Palace" refers to the place where the wives and concubines of the Japanese shogunate lived, essentially the harem of the shogun. In a house full of women, including the shogun's wet nurse, wife, concubine, and over a hundred maidservants, peace would be a rare occurrence. The favored concubines constantly fight, competing for the shogun's favor, trying to bear his children, and striving for power, using every possible dirty trick, leaving no room for weakness.

In the early Edo period harem, as the wet nurse of the third generation Tokugawa shogunate, Haruhi Okura was regarded as the "strongest woman in harem history - the Empress of the Great Inner Palace," holding a very high status. Yuki Matsushita plays a pitiful woman abandoned by her husband, entering the shogun's residence and becoming the supervisor of the harem. To support Iemitsu's succession as shogun, she uses every means necessary, including informing and cursing. Viewing Iemitsu as her own son, she even forcibly brings nuns she fancies into the harem as concubines, displaying a domineering and strong attitude, making many viewers grit their teeth. Besides realistically recreating the luxurious and extravagant scenes of the Japanese palace, the intrigue and betrayal among the harem women are the main attractions.

More splendid costumes than "Palace of Desire"

"One of the top ten Japanese dramas in 2003," "Great Inner Palace" required considerable effort from the production team. Not only did they visit relevant historical sites and rebuild them, but they also filmed at the famous period drama location - Toei Kyoto Studio Park, showcasing the Edo atmosphere vividly. People in the shogun's residence held prestigious positions, thus their kimonos were naturally very luxurious. Therefore, the costumes of characters in the drama were carefully researched and extremely splendid, surpassing "Palace of Desire." The station spared no expense, with each kimono costing over 100,000 yuan. According to Asa Setouchi, she could never try on so many different styles of kimonos in real life, and this time she enjoyed herself through the series.

Takeshi Kitano willingly takes a supporting role

Sexy goddess Norika Fujiwara, due to declining popularity, has to take a supporting role in the upcoming "Great Inner Palace: Hana no Ran" (final chapter) airing in Japan in October, playing opposite young actress Rinna Uchiyama. "Great Inner Palace: Hana no Ran" tells the story of various conflicts among the several wives of the fifth shogun Tsunayoshi. Rinna Uchiyama plays the side wife Anko, while Norika Fujiwara plays the main wife Shinko. It is revealed that Rinna Uchiyama's popularity has been rising continuously, while Norika Fujiwara's exposure rate has significantly decreased recently. This participation in "Great Inner Palace" is actually Norika Fujiwara's attempt to regain prominence.

The first lead of the first chapter of "Great Inner Palace" is Yuki Matsushita, with Reiko Takashima playing the major antagonist. Due to her consistently sharp acting, she has become the most anticipated actor in the drama. The reason why Norika Fujiwara willingly takes a supporting role is to reach the level of Reiko Takashima, but whether she can achieve this depends on her next performance.
