These dual blows forced Ling to decide to take a break from school and work at Hong Kong's five-star hotel - Shengwei Hotel. After a series of twists and trials, she rose from the lowest-ranking employee to become a senior manager at this hotel. But fate once again played tricks on her, forcing her to leave the job that embodied her ideals, starting a tough entrepreneurial life. After several years of struggle, the small travel agency she founded became a quite powerful tourism enterprise in Hong Kong. Her personal journey reflects the collective character and spirit of perseverance, practicality, and optimism of Hong Kong people in adversity.
On the other hand, Zhu Xiuling's good friend Lin Yuhong took a different path. In the wake of the financial storm, Lin Yuhong moved from Lamma Island to Hong Kong, seeking the ideal life she desired. Over the ten years since Hong Kong's return, Gao Jiasheng, with his firm belief in Hong Kong and Mainland China and his foresight and wisdom, led the Shengtai Group out of the Asian financial crisis. His body also fully embodies the Hong Kong people's indomitable and optimistic spirit. Gao Jiasheng's two sons, Gao Tianze and Gao Tianrui, respectively represent two different attitudes of Hong Kong people towards Hong Kong's development after its return: one is negative or even resistant, while the other is positive, optimistic, and down-to-earth. As successors to Gao Jiasheng, their performances over the past ten years post-return determined Gao Jiasheng's choice between them. The evolution of the relationship between the Gao family father and sons over the past ten years condensed the understanding and changes of Hong Kong people regarding Hong Kong's future after its return.
