"The Eternal Legend" tells the story of a New York homicide detective. He is extraordinarily smart and decisive in action, unlike ordinary people; but also unfathomable, because he has an astonishing secret: he is eternally immortal.
In 1642, John Amsterdam was an ordinary Dutch soldier in the New Amsterdam (which later developed into New York) colony. During a massacre of the natives, he saved an Indian girl. As a reward, the girl cast an ancient spell on him - making him eternally immortal. She told him: he would never grow old unless he found his one true love. Only then would he be whole and ready to face death.
Amsterdam now realizes that this is actually a very complicated blessing. After three centuries of journey, he has experienced many adventures, which have given him extraordinary talents. However, every person Amsterdam meets slowly leaves him: friends, lovers, and children gradually grow old and eventually leave him, while he remains forever young. The joy of eternal life also brings emotional loneliness and solitude. At this point, the blessing has turned into a curse. His only confidant and lifelong friend is Omar, the owner of a jazz club. Over the years, he has kept Amsterdam's secret, and of course, kept his own secret as well.
John Amsterdam has witnessed the entire history of New York evolving from a colonial village into a metropolis. He is a living embodiment of New York City, having become one with Manhattan. With the extraordinary skills and unique knowledge brought by his long life experiences, today's Amsterdam has become one of the best homicide detectives in the New York Police Department. With the help of his determined partner Eva Marquez, they solve one bizarre murder case after another.
